Hi there! New to this but have read some other posts and totally relate to lots of probs/challenges mentioned. I bought a 7 yr old tb last september, he'd raced briefly at 4yrs and spent pretty much the next 3 yrs in a field. It took almost 3 months for us to clear his rain rot, tried a number of dif cures, most effective was betadine wash and manual removal of scabs .....Yuck!! Totally worth it though and Oz put on great weight and developed gorgeous shiny coat......until recently.......! I've just noticed smallish sort of bald patches developing on his coat, not like the scald really, but so paranoid it will return!! Someone suggested it might be midge bites?? Any ideas anyone??? I should mention, I live in Ireland, so only difference between winter and summer is the rain is warmer in summer.....and the midges are a killer!! I have a waterproof light summer sheet on him now, just wondered if there's anything else I should be doing for him? ;D

Hi rosey and welcome to exracers. ;D
I think yor midges are a lot like our little gnats that make my horses miserable in the summer and I live in Michigan. I really don't do anything special other than fly sprays, fly masks, and a good fly spray. Also my barn fans help them a lot too. Sorry I'm not much help, am I?

Hi rosey and A huge Welcome!!! It does sound like midges/gnats causing the bald spots, especially if your horse doesn't have the tell-tale scabby bumps of rain rot.
