I don't know for sure whether or not Brig has ulcers. If I had to guess, I'd say he does. I don't have the funds at this time to get him scoped and pay for the meds. He has a recent "life-change" where he is in the pasture daily with buddies and has all the hay he wants and needs. All if which will help him if he does have ulcers. I started him on G.U.T powder and it seems to have helped. I upped his dosage the week before the move and for two weeks afterward. My instructor uses U-Gard for her horses and I'm wondering which would be a better alternative. I like that U-Gard is cheaper but the G.U.T seems to work, too. However, the supplements have different ingredients and seem to maybe do different thing? U-Gard Ingredients: Calcium Carbonate, Kaolin, Diatomaceous Earth, Dried Apple Pectin Pulp, Magnesium Oxide, Zinc Oxide, Methylcellulose, Silicon Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Mineral Oil, Natural and Artificial Flavors. G.U.T Ingredient Per Serving Per Pound Lactobacillus Acidophilus 1.5 billion CFU Lactobacillus Lactis 1.5 billion CFU Magnesium Silicate 2400 mg Hydrolyzed Collagen 3400 mg Mannose 2600 mg Glycine 750 mg L-Glutamine 525 mg Deglycyrrhized Licorice Powder 525 mg Gamma Oryzanol 150 mg Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin 150 mg Here is the comparison: www.smartpakequine.com/ProductComparisonResult.aspx?CategoryId=24

U-Gard and also Finish Line's U7 do NOT cure ulcers they only help prevent them. Ask your vet about a generatic brand of GastroGuard, or he can also give you something in a pill form, I'll have to check the spellings on those and get back to you.

Ugard does claim that is has cured ulcers in their study, but I couldn't find independent information to support it. We tried it with Killian, the powder stinks, but nothing we've tried works with Killian.
You can buy Zantac at the store (Ranitidine generic form). We treated Dunkin for a year, he shows no symptoms and has been off it since Christmas.
Good luck!

How many boxes of Zantac do you feed a 1100 lb horse per feeding?

What about honey? I am reading about how it can heal stomach ulcers in humans.

Our vet said 1200mg per feeding. But we did fine on half the dose, and if your vet will give you a script, it's about $36 a month from smartpak
eta: about 4 days after starting it we noticed a difference in Dunk.

I just started Katy on 1600 mg ( I have a BIG girl though! )of cimitidine twice daily. I also added aloe juice, one cup twice daily. I've only started a three days ago but I don't get the grinding and sensativity as much as before. I heard that with rantidine, you have to give it exactly 8 hrs and I couldn't give it three times daily....I'm hoping after a month of the cimitidine, I'll be able to go to something like G.U.T. or something similiar along with the aloe juice to help prevent them.

Never heard the 8 hours thing. We gave it twice daily for a year and he looks and feels great. Though I've heard good things about cimitidine as well. Seems that some work on one horse, some works on another. My vet cautions about generic gastroguard though. Seems that when broken down by compounding pharmacies it loses potency in most cases. I googled it to find out information.

I gave Charm Cimetidine 2x daily for a couple months one winter when she stopped eating, it worked well.
She would NOT eat the U-Gard powder. She didn't mind the aloe vera juice on her grain but I didn't see any difference with it.
I now use TractGard pellets, both as colic prevention and stomach soother. When I know she's likely to get stressed I give her a whole tube of UlcerGard (which is Omeprazole, like GG but you don't need a prescription to buy it) each day for about 3 days.

U-Gard comes in pellets also. Worked wonders with Lombard.

I use the U-Guard powder and Have for about a year. I love it. Guff likes it too. But we feed beet pulp and it mixes right in.
I started him on the Ranatidine 2x's per day for about a month first, then started introducing the U-guard. Now I only give him ranatidine before going to an event.

How many times per day do you administer the ulcer supplements? I was at 2x but went down to 1 this week and he is swishing his tail and kicking at his belly again.

If you're trying to cut back, I'd say try halving each dose instead of taking away once a day. But if he's ouchy he might not be ready for cutting back yet =(

So, I met a naturopath student in my exercise class who told me that cabbage broth was great for ulcers vs. aloe juice. If anyone is interested in the details, I'll see her again in about two weeks.
