I'm leasing my friend's senior horse for the summer for my girls. She'll be at my barn, but on pasture board. The fields haven't been used for four years and it's her and one other horse on about five acres with a run-in. She will be ridden on trails on the weekends and occasionally during the week. Likely, she won't be doing much cantering or hard work.
I'm looking for a good complete feed for her and my farm store carries Purina, LMF, Triple Crown and Allegra. I'm wondering what the best option is for her? She used to be a barrel horse. I am a little leery of feeding her too much starch with the girls being very novice and all.
Thanks for the help!

I've always had good luck with Purina Senior. It's the one I fall back on when others haven't done what I thought they would. I do not feed a lot of it though. I mix it with the beet pulp and oats and BOSS so it is a little of everything.

We feed buckeye, but used to feed Purina. My older App just gets 2 cups a feeding and as much hay as he really wants. He's a gets fat on air type, and since he doesn't get worked that much, it's fine for him. In the winter we supplement with alfalfa cubes and beet pulp. I've found with senior feed (and I give it to a 4 y/o as well) that it doesn't make them hot.

We feed Purina senior to three of ours and they are prospering. Or maybe its alll that grass since the move, but now that WE are managing their diet, everyone (the olds ones too) are racing around the fields like they are running races. Willy ran so long and hard yesterday his shoes came loose. We've never see him run like this.

I have been feeding Purina Sr., but I'm switching to Triple Crown Sr for the higher fat content. My horse has done ok on the Purina, but not great, so I'll let you know what happens after we switch. I've heard great things about the TC

Unfortunately, we won't be leasing the mare. Turns out she has pretty bad arthiritis. However, we are likely leasing another horse who will probably be a senior, so this is certainly helpful information. Thanks!

I use all TC feeds for my guys (can't get Buckeye here.) I used to have Jay on the Senior for the extra protein, plus high fat.
Nice thing about TC is that it has guaranteed analysis and is considered a Complete Feed. No worries for my Jay, who is VERY picky about his hay!

I have my 15 y.o. on Purina Eq Sr. and he is thriving on it!

I really like the Buckeye feeds, but since Flynn has been doing so well on the Purina Senior I'm not inclined to change at this point without a good reason.

Just a quick follow up, we switched to TC about a month ago. Romeo looks better and has gained weight and has more enthusiasm for everything-not sure if it's the grain or the fact that he's completed his lyme treatment, but he looks like a million bucks these days
