Fun fun fun! Fungus season... I was hoping Verreaux wouldn't be prone to it, but considering it is now all over his legs and even on his ears.. I'd say he is.. Any tips on getting rid of that crap? I've tried MicroTech spray in the past, am currently using MTG... His hair is flaking out, leaving bald, nasty patches...
GROSS!!!

When my one of my horses has dermatitis (usually on their back legs), I scrub with betadine for a little over a week. As per a vet's instructions, I lather up the betadine for a couple of minutes and then let it sit, such that the betadine has at least 5 minutes of contact with the skin and can actually do its job. The vet said to do this for 10 days (usually). I finish up with a nice towel dry.
Hope that helps.

Is it on his shins or everywhere on his legs? If it's just his shins I've had good lick with baby oil. It softens the scabs so you can pick them off without it hurting the horse. Then wash with anitbacterial soap and dry. The key word is dry..... If you have all over fungus my most favorite treatment is Muck itch spray.

I second the Muck-itch. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. It got rid of Charm's cannon "crud" in no time at all.

I think I have found a miracle! Before I got to the tack store to get the Muck-itch, we had a pharm. rep. come do a luncheon for us at work... she has a bunch of horses- mostly TBs and I asked her if any of the products are good for fungus... she immediately told me Malaseb.. She gave me a bottle of the spray and I've used it for 4 days now, and the crud is darn near gone... Here is a link to the spray: www.healthypets.com/malasebspray.htmlOr she said you can buy the big concentrate and mix it 1:16 ratio (concentrate:water) and put it in a spray bottle and use that... Worth a shot for nasty, stubborn fungus!

Malaseb works well, you can get it from the vet also. That's what we normally do.

Does the Malaseb seem to burn your horse? I have some Fung-Away spray and can't use it b/c my older TB acts as if it burns his skin. I, too, have done the Betadine washes, but I find that once I quit doing them for a week or so, the fungus comes back! If the Malaseb is ok for sensitive skinned horses, I will pick some up to try.
