I haven't been on the board in a really long time. Zephyr is settling in okay at Mending Wall and he's actually going to the NYS Breeder's Show. There are some Hunter classes I can put him in - I just have to get him past the idea that the ring is not a racetrack and he does not have to beat the other horses to win.
Anyway, he came to MW in the winter and he was full of himself breaking fences at his previous place and continued the tradition at MW. He jumped the 5 foot round pen panel and took off into the woods - luckily he didn't impale himself and suffered only minor scrapes. He doesn't like being in his stall and he has dutch doors so he breaks the bottom and frees himself. For awhile he had to be locked up all day in his stall and he started finding stuff to do. Even with Likits and toys when someone goes in his stall or when he's having a temper tantrum he'll grab his ankle in his teeth and bite it. We didn't know what was going on because everytime I would take him out he would have blood on his leg. I went through his stall thinking something was protruding and catching him but nothing. The BO mentioned it to me a few weeks ago. The only way he was allowed out was if he was babysat in a dirt round pen. He loved his freedom and rolled and bucked and carried on but he was missing his horse buddies. Now he's earned his freedom to be able to go out in between other horses and he's behaving himself, but he still grabs his ankle. I've tried vet wrap covered with Cayenne pepper and it's off his leg the next day. I don't want it to get infected but I can't keep it covered. And it's right where a bell boot ends and a sports boot begins. Advice anyone. He rolls weird too. He goes down on his knees but then instead of his back end going down, he face plants and hits the ground really hard, kicking his hind legs out straight. Do horses have to LEARN to roll?
