Supplement experts, need your help!! I have Verreaux on Platinum Performance Pro, as our vet recommends to all their clients... However, I am starting to doubt that he needs to be on it. He is young, and healthy, and gets good nutrition (12% pelleted feed, corn oil, and pasture 24/7)... He has been on it since I have owned him, so I don't know if he will change when he is taken off, or not (like the quality of his coat, etc.) It is a really good overall supplement, I'm not doubting that, and it seemed to do really well for Saint, but I'm just not sure I can justify the cost. I pay $70/ every 5 weeks or so for it. I am thinking of taking him off of Platinum and putting him on FasTrack that our BM offers for $20/month. I feel like he could benefit more from a stomach guard vs. an overall supplement. My BM also said that she has noticed her horses coats and hooves are great when they are on FasTrack (she has several OTTBs) What do you think?
MTA: he is on the recommended 2 scoops daily of the Platinum, another money saving option for me is to put him on 1 scoop daily, which is what they used to be on at the other barn... it would be less than the recommended dosage, but again- does he need it?

Best way to find out is to try. You can always put him back on it if your other ideas don't pan out. That's what I do here. We tried another multivitamin for awhile, decided their coats didn't look as nice, switched again and found something that seemed to work well. Just remember to give the new product enough time to show results.

Does he need it? Probably not unless he is in heavy training or the pasture/hay is very nutritionally deficient. Most people oversupplement their stock anyway - all those uneeded and excess vitamins and minerals are being shoveled to the manure pile every day and that is expensive. Better by far is to find out what is deficient in your soil and feed and work from there, or if in doubt, use something formulated locally for local soil conditions. If you already know what is missing, add something specific to increase that: for example, I know there is almost no copper available here in feeds, so I add a good handful of molasses about three times a week but try to avoid a lot of additional salt as the soil on my hayland is saline and the water is high in natural mineral salts.

That is what I'm thinking Big Tee... I'm not sure what is lacking or rich in the soil around here, so I don't know where to begin, but he is pretty well balanced on just the grain and pasture. I think I am going to take him off of it and see how he does. Like I said, I am probably going to put him on FasTrack... any sort of stomach guard is good in my book, and I don't want him getting ulcers or anything.
