I give my two OTTBs Glucosimine Pure Powder, which aids in rebuilding of Cartilage and I have had success with it with on the track horses with minor problems.
I was also reading up on Fish Oil (for humans) which states it is used to reduce inflammation and act as a pain killer. Study shows that it does wonders with Arthritis and is easy on the stomach unlike long term effects such as Aspirin.
So, I was thinking, what if we use Fish Oil in horses with Arthritis? Would it have the same effect as reducing inflammation and relieving pain? It would be a great alternative to bute if it works! Anyone who had an arthritic horse care to try?

I love flax seed oil for me which is supposed to be about the same thing. How will you determine how much fish oil to give a horse? I guess you can buy it in a bottle and pour it on food like any other oil although the thought of an herbivore eating fish oil is a bit disturbing to me. I wonder if a horse will eat food that tastes like fish. If not maybe flax seed oil would be less rank?

We (meaning DH and me) take the fish oil pills, so I'll just hide them in Eagles beet pulp mixture. I figured I'd start with 8-10 gelcaps a day for 2 weeks and see if that shows any difference. Eagle will also take bites of my ham sandwich if I let him, but that bothered me a lot to have him eating pork, it just didn't seem right to me. I didn't like it a bit. go figure. we love Eagle because he is special.

Fish oil is a great source of Omega 3 with is a natural anti-inflammatory, thus relieving pain. They make fish oil that is palatable for horses Wellpride is one product and I know there are a couple of others out there. Wellpride would cost around $60 a month per horse. I'm not sure on the math...it might well be cheaper if you can get him to eat the pills. Flaxseed would also work and is pretty affordable.

Well I put the pills in Eagles beet pulp mash last night and he ate it all gone. Of course Eagle loves his mashes so I knew he would eat it all if he didn't bite down on the gelcap. So we are off on a 2 week trial.

Since we're having a trial here, can it get stickied so we don't lose the thread?

Eagle got his 3rd dosing today and doesn't even seem to notice or care that the fish oil gelcaps are in his mash.

Eagle doesn't seem to even notice they are in his mash at all. I wonder if I will see a difference at all in him and how soon. Day 4
