I can't tell if this is a cardio or a back or core thing...but when I'm cantering now I get winded really fast and feel like my low/side back muscles are cramping up. Once that pain comes it's hard to breathe. Maybe I'm holding my breath??? Any thughts on this? I'm doing those reverse back crunches on my swiss ball to try to build back strength. I think my back is really, really weak after my two injuries (broekn vertebrae and more recent whiplash).

For me it's definitely a cardio thing. And it's not getting better. I do have to remember to breathe, and to relax my back and legs, but the bottom line is, I must get fitter. *sigh* I hate gyms...and with a 0 degree windchill it's hard to get motivated to do anything outside!

I know!! I am incorporating a mile and a half walk after I park my car to and from work (so 3 miles total) but man it was HARD to be motivated to do it today!!! Makes sense to be a combo of cardio and relaxation. I don't like getting older.

When I first really started to ride my horse, I was completely out of breath, even riding daily for six days for the last year and a half. That was because A) I didn't know what I was doing B) My horse didn't know what SHE was doing and C) I wasn't using my core until then. When I ride my horse, she looooooooves getting strung out and long. It takes all my abs, butt and lower back to hold her canter where I want it until she finally softens. She has been getting stronger too and so it's not so much holding. I feel your pain but it's just a matter of doing a little bit at a time and remembering to breathe while doing core work. Very hard to do at first but eventually it will be like driving a stick shift. ;D I'm finding it easier now that my pony is getting stronger but there are days when I don't sit properly and my back grinds and is really sore after I get off and days afterwards. My hot tub and heating pads are my friends!

Well, in my case it's age and decrepitude.

You know, I can canter in 2 point all day, but when I really sit the canter and get to work....ACK. Like Filly said, Charm needs my abds to stay focused AND round AND on the aids...my instructor sees us putter along W-T-C on a loose rein and then in our lessons, she LOVES putting us to work. Hahaha! Sadistic intstructor, 10 years younger than I am...Yes, decrepitude it is! lol
I've decided to up my exercise regimen. Well, to START one, anyway!

YAY! Another good lesson and a much better time with those back muscles. I had some really good breakthroughs and tried to think about relaxing more and it totally helped!
