Right now i'm 142 pounds I believe and 5 foot 8 inches. My BMI is 21.6 (normal weight range). My thighs, in my opinion, are just gross and totally out of shape. They have no tone to them at all. What exercises can I do and how many times a week can I do them to strengthen and tone my thighs/butt? Anyone know of a good site or book that helps you get in shape for riding?
I'd also like to get my weight to around 130. How can I do this safely and without running? I have arthritis in my knees (even though i'm only 16) and the cold will just damage my joints.
So, any meal plans/exercise tips you can give me? Thanks!

Okay, first of all, I don't think you need to lose weight, because you're in the healthy weight range for your height. So please be careful...it's so hard at our age...everyone makes you feel like you need to lose weight to look better, but you might not. However, I'm bad at taking my own advice, so I'm not going to tell you not to try What I do, is eat slow. It takes your body 20 minutes before you start feeling full from what you've eaten, which is why you feel so overstuffed after you eat sometimes. If you eat slower, you get full sooner. I also cut out the snacks. I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner (in moderation), and no snacks. I drink lots of water, and avoid pop for the most part. These are things that have helped me lose weight.

I must resist getting those delicious ice cream cookie sandwiches at lunch! I swear they call for me. That sounds like a very good idea. I'll start bringing a water bottle to school and only have meals and no snacks. But I never have breakfast (yes, I know, it's really bad) because we never have any breakfast food that I can eat quickly. What can I grab on the go?

do you have a gym at your school to work out in? i would try the bicycle as a lower impact option. i highly suggest doing various leg stretches after your exercise (even after riding your horse) to lengthen the leg muscles so they won't bulk up (like dancers, you see them stretch all the time, and their legs are rock hard). make sure to stretch your legs in all directions too

Have you tried yoga? I think they have yoga books for riding now, I got a yoga video for weight loss. It would be low impact, but help tone the body.
