I may have mentioned it before. Particularly those of you with daughters (Niaru?)
Stunning little story. Set in the 40's/50's ... My mother gave it to me to read - I keep re-reading it.
Narrative by Cassandra - she writes it sitting with her feet in the kitchen sink, because the castle is so cold. Older sister, Rose. 'NewAge' stepmother, Topaz, who is actually rather lovable, despite her habit of communing with nature in the buff .. Other people ...
Father is a writer - a bit off the wall - but that's a whole other story...
Then the 'Marekins' arrive.. Cassandra falls in love with Simon... There's a wonderful passage where she has dyed herself green ... "My God, it's a ghost!" Says Simon. "No, no," responds Cassandra, "It's just that we've all been dying ... " Read on...

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Brooks. There was a recent film, I believe..
Then there's the sequence where they have retrieved the Great-Aunt's furs from Harrods - and Cassandra is mistaken for a bear... ;D

Oh, Brooks! They're on the train, coming back from London, Rose and Cassandra...
Cassandra is embarrassed by the outmoded furs, sneaks off on the wrong side of the track... wearing the fur ...
Helloo?? Simon takes off after her with a shot-gun, 'bear escaped from local fair' etc....
ROMANCE blossoms as he carries her back in his arms ... "I killed the bear," he announces... She knows, he knows, she knows, he knows...
BROOOOKS? Read it again!
