Did you guys hear about this? 3 injured horses in one weekend- how terrible. One breakdown (Gold Train-euthanized), one seasmoid fracture (Teuflesberg, 17th in the Derby- taken to Rood and Riddle), and the worst was a horse that flipped while being saddled and was euthanized due to head trauma (Dream of Angels). What a bummer.

yeah, I was watching. Apparently, the synthetic track gets tacky in hot weather - something about the wax in it softening. The two that were injured had very similar injuries from what it sounded like - sesamoid fractures, but the skin wasn't broken.
The colt who flipped in the saddling enclosure - that was just awful. Total freak accident.
It was a rough day.

I watched the races too. I still can't believe they followed Teuflesberg with the camera so closely after he broke down. Normally they don't show that. Gave me horrible flashbacks from Kriss this past year. Plus, he got away form the jockey after the jock jumped off. So he had to be caught by the outrider. It was awful. I still can't believe his injury was not as severe as the one Gold Train suffered. It was a terrible day for racing, that's for sure.

So since I wasn't watching....did Teuflesberg have a breakdown (where the entire suspensory apparatus goes too) or just a sesamoid fracture?

Well, I'm hearing that Bramlage didn't do the surgery yesterday as planned since Teuflesberg's WBC count was too low......hopefully they can do it today.

I just heard that he broke both sesamoids. though it seems likely that he had a full breakdown, since he got loose and ran away on it - that just compounded the horror.

some good news, finally
Teuflesberg Surgery Successful; Prognosis Good Grade II winner Teuflesberg, who fractured both sesamoid bones in his left front leg in the Oct. 6 Phoenix Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland, underwent a successful surgery Oct. 11 at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington and is on the way to what co-owner Donnie Kelly hopes will be a full recovery.

I'm wondering how much of it has to do with the fact that they have synthetic track footing there. I believe it's synthetic..it's not dirt.

Synthetic track? I didn't even know there was such a thing! Poor horses. Glad I wasn't watching. I hate to see horse wrecks. I can take riders wrecks any day but show me a horse wreck and I fall apart.
