California sire Valid Wager dies at 15 By Jeff Lowe Valid Wager, a Grade 2 winner who sired Grade 1 winner Valid Video, was euthanized on Tuesday due to cancer complications. The 15-year-old Valid Appeal horse out of Bid Gal, by Bold Bidder, was standing for $5,000 at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez, California. Valid Wager sired 14 stakes winners among 201 winners from 273 starters who earned $13,595,199 through Wednesday. Valid Video scored five stakes wins, including the 2003 King’s Bishop (G1), Carry Back (G3), and Sunshine Millions Ocala Stud Dash Stakes. Valid Wager also sired Tonight’s Wager, a champion in Puerto Rico and stakes winner in the United States. Bred in Florida by Harry Mangurian Jr., Valid Wager won the 1994 Hollywood Juvenile Stakes (G3), ’95 Hutcheson Stakes (G2), and ’96 Westchester Handicap (G3). Valid Wager stood four seasons at Mangurian’s Mockingbird Farm in Ocala before moving to Tommy Town in 2001. Valid Wager’s half sister, stakes winner Copelan’s Bid Gal, is the dam of Grade 1 winner Purge.
