February 5, 2007 XLB Patrick captured Western Fair Raceway's top pacing class - the $18,400 Preferred - for the second consecutive week and in doing so he demonstrated a great deal of versatility. One week ago, the seven-year-old son of Davids Pass - Byrd Beach rallied from off cover for a 1:56.3 decision, and earlier tonight he did all of the road work en route to another $9,200 payday for owner Michael Cecile of Windsor, ON. In rein to Jason Brewer, the Mark Austin-trainee forged to immediate command from Post 3. The gelding successfully laid down panels of :28.2, :58 and 1:27 before tossing in a :28.3 kicker in the 1:55.3 performance over a track that was rated 'fast' with a two-second time allowance. Button Up (Mike Horner) sat the pocket trip and held for second while race favourite Grand Bend Turbo (Dave Wall) was forced to settle for third. The victory was the 38th lifetime trip to victory lane for XLB Patrick, who upped his lifetime earnings to $340,391 with the win. From Standardbred Canada Insider News
While this isn't earthshattering speed, or of any great import in the general world of racing, it IS pretty important in these parts - XLB Patrick is Saskatchewan bred, and started racing here. He was bred by a man I have known for years and his son started the colt and gave him his first starts.
