Theres a new horse at the barn just shipped in from OH. From sone big wig western reiners outfit there. This horse is 7, totaly unsocialized with people and I think other horses and the poor guy is just totaly out of wack. I was there late yesterday evening taking Tango for a walk and grooming her when the horses owner shows up. She seems ok for the most part but then she went and put a chain on this poor guys nose and started yanking on him for the littlest things. He was only being curious about his new suroundings and wasnt being pushy or bad and yank yank yank...each time she yanked it was like I was feeling it with the poor guy. Then she starts bragging about how shes doing western showmanship with him in a month or so and it was all I could do to not say anything about the chain yanking. All I said was that you should start working with him without the chain then since you wont be allowed to yank on him in the ring. I dont think she got my point at all and she just went on gabbing about what her plans are for him and how much he costed and what a great reiner he is. I was thinking yeah guess we will see how great he stays. She is leavinghis care to thebarn totaly and hes on a crappy feed that they use so I give it a month before he starts looking not so great anymore. He seems to be a nice lil hose, and is really built to the hilt and he definately has had some awsome western training but I hate to think what will happen over the next months to ruin all of that. Im trying hard to hold my tougn and be nice but its hard when the poor guy is being chain yank for every lil move he makes, I can see him getting norotic now. Man I cant wait to get theheck outa that place....our mortgage looks good so far, we got the thumbs up from them.

...when I go to western shows I can't stand the way the western pleasure riders CONSTANTLY yank on their horses! As they ride, the almost OBSESSIVELY yank, yank, yank on the bit and the horse ducks, ducks, ducks his head! It looks totally stupid and yet, it's the way they ALL do it. I wonder what is the PROBLEM? The whole thing sound suspicious that some lady with a great show horse is boarding there and not even noticing that they don't care for their horses. Did she look in the stalls? Did she inspect the hay and feed? She wouldn't board there if she had! Anyway, good luck with the mortaging process with the new place. I'm sure it will work out.

She was telling me she had a horse there a couple years ago...so I dont get it either. I will say that since the sheriff had been out there a couple times things have gotten better in some aspects...the feeding is kept up on a bit better, stalls are done more and water is being given too but its still obvious that its not the best place around. I think she was looking at price when she decided to board here since thier full board is the cheapest compared to most places around. There is a couple from NYC coming this weekend sometime to look over the place to board thier 2 park hacks, is what they called them. As of yesterday there was only 3 bags of thier feed left and no bedding left at all, I bet its delivered today so it looks nicey nice for the prospective boaders...

I cant believe I have to worry about this now on top of her just getting cut to all hell....Ok I am calling my vet now to see what he says we need to do....

Gotta love those chain yankers. NOT. What I want to know, is why some people think using nose chains makes them more of a horseman? Frankly, I'm not impressed. I was somewhere with Zen once (for one of those fireman/police rescue courses) and a couple of the hoity toities brought their horses out to graze while we were taking a break. And they commented on the fact that I didn't have a chain on his nose. All I could say was I didn't need one, plus this way I don't have to worry about him stepping on his lead and ripping his nose off. Ya know, they still didn't get the point. From what I could see, neither of their horses needed the chains either, but I guess there is some kind of image thing. At least they weren't yanking them about. Oh Ad, I haven't forgotten your interest in the course, it's just that I'm waiting for my clubs next election. The current regime has gotten into wanting to get paid for everything and that's not what this particular club was ever about. So, here's hoping the person I vote for wins. Will still get them material anyway, but have a feeling it will be easier if I wait another week.

Ok the vet confirmed I am a chronic worry wort LOL....like I didnt know that already ...He is going to check up this new horse and see where he came from in OH and if hes been vacinated or not. He looked back on Tangos files from her old owner, he was her vet then also, and said she was vacininated a a lil over a year ago for the EHV that causes abortions but thinks it probably wouldnt do anything now anyways. With the injuries she just got and being there is a chance she could have an infection brewing, slight chance but still a chance, he isnt sure he would want to vacinate her now. He is going to call me later after he can get some info on the new horse and tell me what he thinks and if I need to worry or not.

When I use to do western showmanship its wasnt as bad as it is today with these 'just there to win people'. Most of the folks back then were there for the love of showing thier horses and not to add to thier collections of ribbons and trophies, althou winning was always great LOL. I had to use a chain on Tango the first 2 weeks I had her but she was so hot from over graining and no one working with her and shewas just so pumped up it wasnt safe to not use one on her for my own and her safety. I think I only had to give her one tiny sqeeze with the chain and she got the idea that I was the boss and not her. Now I wouldnt think of useing one let alone just yanking on her for the heck of it like this lady was doing. The poor horse went to sniff at a tack box and as he put his head down she just yanked so hard his eyeballs looked like theyd pop out. I think I am going to find it hard to keep my mouth shut if this lady keeps it up but I am trying hard. Its really a shame to cause this horse was definetly a pretty penny and knows his stuff, hes gonna be ruined in a month if this keeps up. Maybe I can horse-nap him to when I leave...Ive got a growing list going now LOL...

Tina, speaking about worry warts, I think I am turning into one. 2 days ago when I went to see Charm, I couldn't find hay in the barn, and when I left, Charm was pacing her stall and pawing, and she looked at her belly once. That was enough for me to worry all night! But when I got there early next morning, all the horses had loads of hay in their stalls, Charm was quietly munching on her hay, everything was fine...Geez I am getting paranoid. You know, at the track the trainer always used a chain on Charm...so the first time I hand walked her I used one too, although I really don't like it. Now I don't use it, and she's fine. Then again there are some horses who really need one...

Obviously this woman doesn't know how well trained this horse is if it was trained for reining.... maybe you should put the halter and chain on her and give it a yank and ask her how it felt! A GOOD YANK SO HER EYES ROLL BACK! The first thing my trainer (NRHA professional yes this is western) did with me and my OTTBs was to teach me to lead properly by removing the chain and make sure I never lead by pulling on the lead. He would hang on my shirt sleeve and ask if it made me feel comfortable. Actually we spent months teaching Diego and Red to lead with no halter. (Motivation stuff if you guys are still doing it) In 4-H they teach kids to lead with a chain for safety, but not to yank. We never yanked on the chains.

Oh she knows how well he wasa trained and bragged non stop about it till I was literaly ready to puke on her shoes. Apparently, I got more dirt on her at the feed store yesterday, her hubby keeps buying her these awsome show horses and by the end of the show season the horses end up being sold for almost nothing, guess she ruins them as a hobby or something. This lil horse she just got is really awsome and is a picture perfect QH with a butt like a tank and hes got awsome muscle in all the right places. All I keep thinking is wow, what a speed event horse he would make with his build. This horse would proably follow along like a puppy with a baling twine around his neck so I dont get why she feels the need to yank on him all the time. I was actualy thinking of taking her chain lead off the stall door hook and putting it in the garbage so she wont be able to use it and maybe she will see she doesnt need it at all, there arent any chain leads laying around for her to use. What I find really amusing is that she will make this big deal about taking him out to work on showmanship and then she just makes a few passes walking in front of the barn doors with the chain on yanking away and then comes right back in saying oh we should do really good at the upcoming show LOL...I wish he would just bite her in the rear or something each time she yanks on his nose.

That's the problem I tend to see with people that insist on using chains. They don't understand that you can't ask the horse to go forward when they have a chain on their nose. Have seen many people ask their horses to rear in that manner and they don't get it. Not rocket science here folks. It's real simple, pull forward on chain causes chain to push back on the nose. So in effect you are asking the horse to go forward and backwards at the same time. Only one place left to go and that's UP! Pretty simple yet many people don't seem to get it.
