After a lengthy battle with laminitis, the legendary pacing sire Artsplace has been euthanized at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.
"We made the decision to spare him any further suffering," Art Zubrod, general manager of Brittany Stallion Management told harnessracing.com this morning.
As a two-year-old, the Abercrombie - Miss Elvira - Albatross colt stunned the racing world by winning the Two-Year-Old Colt Pace Breeders Crown at Pompano Park, pacing the mile in 1:51.1 in a 40-mile-per-hour headwind. The World Record over a mile track at the time was 1:51.4.
With high expectations for Artsplace at three, he won 10 of 18 starts and earned $972,487, equalling the 1:50.4 World Record for three-year-old pacers on a five-eighths mile track. But another three-year-old from that crop by the name of Precious Bunny won 20 of 25 races and set a single-season earnings record on his way to being named Horse of the Year.
In 1992, as a four-year-old, Artsplace was moved from the Gene Riegle barn to the Bob McIntosh stable. Artsplace flourished, went undefeated in 16 seasonal outings, posted a World Record of 1:49.2 and was named the U.S. Horse of the Year.
Upon Artsplace's retirement in 1992, his driver John Campbell told Harness World Magazine that "Artsplace never lost a race in which he had the lead in the stretch," and that he was "the fastest pacer I've ever driven."
In the breeding shed, Artsplace was every bit the dominant force that he was on the racetrack. With just under $115 million earned by his performers, Artsplace sits fifth among all-time leading money-winning sires.
Artsplace has sired 15 millionaires, with the elite group led by Art Major p,4,1:48.4 ($3,273,217) and the pacing mares Worldly Beauty p,4,1:49.3 ($2,146,076), Glowing Report p,1:49.2 ($2,145,073), and Galleria p,4,1:49.1 ($1,814,453). Standardbred Canada wishes to extend its condolences to the connections of Artsplace (from Standardbred Canada Insider News)
