Western Canadian invader Red Star Senator put in a monster performance in tonight's $35,000 Four-Year-Old Open, pacing to a 1:48.4 score and tying the older pacing horse record.
Red Star Senator, driven for the first time by Ron Pierce, got away in fourth through early fractions of :26.2 and :54.1 before being left uncovered on the outside. Pacing stride for stride with Blue Burner (Brian Sears) through three-quarters in 1:21.3, The Senator exploded down the lane and held off the late-closing rush of Extreme Three (Randy Waples) for the narrow decision in 1:48.4.
Owned by Mary Murphy of Surrey, B.c. and trained by Robert Merschback, Red Star Senator (Presidental Ball - Whimsically) lowered his lifetime mark by five full seconds and surpassed the quarter million dollar mark in lifetime purses.
From Standardbred Canada Insider News
The farm this horse came from also produced Red Star Minckler and Red Star Sprinkler, bot sub-1:50 horses, and Red Star Sprinkler' MUCH slower half-brother, my own Rambo

Wow! That's quick! Did you get to see the race?
My shoer has a couple of harness horses, but they go more in the 1:56 range. Not so impressive.
