Excelling from a crafty steer by his trainer Doug Brown, who has been named Canada’s Driver of the Year more often than anyone else, Escapable Beaux marched to victory in the $59,600 final of the Willowdale Pacing Series for four-year-olds under pristine conditions at Woodbine tonight.
The son of Artiscape clocked the victory in 1:50.4, taking one and two-fifths of a second off his life’s mark for owner Gordon Bryan of Calgary, Alberta.
I Zee and driver Rick Zeron were sent off as the 6-5 post time favourite, but after racing tough on the outer tier, the duo finished ninth. Four Starz Sisco and Michaels Marvel, who raced as a two horse entry for owner Robert Murphy of BC, finished second and third, respectively.
After the wings of the starting gate folded to begin the event, Blue Burner and I Zee both charged for the lead. Driver Jack Moiseyev, aboard Blue Burner, didn’t want to yield to Zeron and I Zee, so he sent his mount hard to the opening quarter-mile pole and reached the stanza in a snappy :26.3.
Zeron, still wanting control of the front end, continued to challenge for the top spot, as the pair battled down the backstretch towards the half-mile pole. All the while, Escapable Beaux sat within striking distance in third, waiting to see the result of the slugfest unfolding in front of him.
Zeron and I Zee had edged in front of Blue Burner as the half-mile timer flashed to life in :55.1, but would settle into second along the pylons on the final turn. Striking while the iron was hot, Brown pulled his pupil out for an attack on Blue Burner as the field rounded for home and was in pursuit when the leader clicked off the third quarter clock in 1:23.2.
As the field met the head of the homestretch, Escapable Beaux was fresh with pace and went on to hold off the rest of the field, who fought for the spoils. Driven by his trainer, Pat Hudon, Four Starz Sisco was second with Michaels Marvel third.
Escapable Beaux, who notched his eighth career win with the effort, now has an overall bankroll which exceeds $326,000. So far this campaign, Escapable Beaux has compiled a record of two wins and one second place finish, good for $60,500 in earnings.
