Just got word that a very young jockey at Beaulah was killed today. His name was Josh Radosevich and he was 16 years old. He was just at Mountaineer last night, with family and friends. Talking about how great of a year he was having. This afternoon, his mount broke both front legs, went down and two horses behind him trampled him. There are several of his family members that are here at MNR and at Thistledown. It would be wonderful if you all could keep them and Josh in your prayers.

I just read about this on Thoroughbred Times. What an absolute tragedy. My prayers go out to family and friends of this life cut too short.

:cryy: This is so horrible. I read the article and started to cry right away. It could have been one of my best friends, my boyfriend, my second family. I heard that his sister, mom, and father were all there and ran out to the track when it happened. I can't even begin to imagine. We don't think about how dangerous a job we have working with horses(not just riding). You just have to thank God for everyday you are safe and healthy. RIP Josh, my prayers go out to his family and friends.

So sad, he was so young :-( I will pray for him and his family.
Can I ask, how does a horse break both front legs? I know he was running, in the front and fell. But it seems unbelievable that both of the horse's legs broke?

Usually what happens is that the horse is sore on one leg. As an example let's say it's the RF. So while the horse is running, he might be feeling some soreness and shift more weight onto the LF leg. This horse was in the lead when he fell. So he was running hard, that's a lot of weight to come down on one leg on a horse that's NOT sore. So, as the horse shifts even more weight onto the "good" leg, it breaks under the stress. A lot of times the horse will not fall but continue trying to run as the jockey tries to pull them up. Adrenaline is a curious thing. So now the "good" leg is broken and the horse is trying to run full weight on the bad leg....snap. Two broken legs. It is the most disguisting thing I've even seen when I see any horse break down, but this is even more disturbing. In one of our races a three year old filly broke all four of her legs. Same thing happened in front and she did not go down. All weight goes to the backend, obviously they are not moving properly and things happen like a train wreck. It's absolutely heartwrenching. A lot of the time, the horses that break down are the ones people are running sore. Not all the time, the track surface plays a HUGE role.

There are 2 clips on the columbus dispatch website about Josh and how the track is going to be investigating what lead to this tragic accident. On one of the clips they did a necropsy of the horse that he was riding and it said that the horse had along with the broken leg, back, ribs and spinal cord. What a loss for the racing world to lose this kid to a freak accident. Here is the link to the website for the video clips......... no worries they never play the accident on them. They are about midway down the page. www.dispatch.com/
