AMERICAN IDEAL UPSETS ROCKNROLL; CAM’S FOOL RALLIES IN $130,000 OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES DIVISIONS
American Ideal ($13.20, $3.20, $2.60) tipped off cover and paced by Meadowlands Pace winner Rocknroll Hanover ($2.20, $2.10) with an eighth of a mile to go, capturing the sixth race, the first of two $130,000 divisions of the Oliver Wendell Holmes for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Saturday afternoon at the Meadowlands.
American Ideal, driven by George Brennan and trained by Casie Coleman, paced the mile in a stakes and track record 1:48.1, winning by five and three-quarter lengths.
Climb The Ladder ($4.60) was third by eight and a quarter lengths.
“The strategy was to wait for Rocknroll to come, take him a little bit and just stalk him,” said Brennan. “If you look at the horse’s lines, it’s the first time he’s had a chance to race in a striking position. He put himself there today and he really pounced when I called on him. He really didn’t have a chance with Post 10 in the Meadowlands Pace but it was a great fourth. Anytime you’re fourth in a big race like that out of the 10-hole, it was great and he made a really great effort that night. I was really looking forward to racing him again.”
“They kept telling me he was a good horse so I wasn’t really surprised that he could kick home like that,” Brennan added. “I raced him like he was the kind of horse they were telling me about, and he didn’t let me down.”
“I’ve known the whole time,” said Coleman. “As I said with every interview I’ve ever had with anybody I know this colt can take them. He needed a post. Three-year-old colts are the best animals in the world right now. He finally got a break. He got an inside post, got a great trip by George. The horse was just awesome. His groom, Eddie Melvin, has been doing an unbelievable job taking care of him, so I’m very happy with him too. We’re just going one week at a time for now. It’s awesome; I don’t know how to explain it.”
“He was good and straight, but he just had no fight when I called on him,” Brian Sears said of Rocknroll Hanover.
“I think he nicked his knee,” trainer Brett Pelling said of Rocknroll Hanover. “Brian thought so, too. He thought he got caught a few times. In the stretch I thought he would go right by, and then he started to back off. I’m waiting now to take a look at him. I can’t complain though this has been a great meet for him. He’s been a special horse. I’m not going to make any excuses or take anything away from the winner — that was the track record.”
American Ideal races for Mac Nichol of St. Albert, Alberta and Brittany Farms of Versailles, Kentucky.
With the victory, the Western Ideal colt now has career earnings of $249,337. He has five wins, two seconds and one third in 12 starts this year. Lifetime, he has nine wins, four seconds and one third in 19 starts.
In the second division of the Oliver Wendell Holmes, carded as the 13th race, Cam’s Fool [$5.40, $3.80, $3.20], driven by John Campbell, rallied for a two and three-quarter length victory over John Adams [$11.20, $5.00] in 1:50.2.
Load The Dice [$6.00] was third by three and three-quarters.
“He’s a great mannered little horse,” said trainer Brett Pelling of Cam’s Fool. “He does everything right. I don’t think he can really control races, but when things break his way, he’s got a great kick on the end of it.”
Cam’s Fool now has three wins, four seconds and one third from 13 starts for owners Jeffrey Snyder of New York City and Lothlorien Equestrian Center of Mississauga, Ontario.
