May 28 Tapioca Hanover provided Rod Hennessy with his 2,500th lifetime win as a driver last night at Northlands Park in Edmonton. The four-year-old Cams Card Shark mare was a comfortable six length winner in a new life best of 1:54.4 to give Hennessy the milestone victory. Owned by Lorne Duffield and Robert Jones of Alberta, Tapioca Hanover is trained by Hennessy’s son Michael.
It didn’t take Hennessey long to capture victory number 2,501 as two races later he was back in the winner’s circle with Show Time Sam who won in 1:55.
Hennessy, a 50 year-old horseman from Millet, Alberta, has just under $12 million earned lifetime as a driver with 1,423 lifetime training wins and $8.9 million earned as a trainer.

Far more impressive than the actual stats. I know drivers with more wins and loads more money, even around here - Keith Clark for one, Don Monkman, Ed Tracey. The difference is, Rod did it the hard way over the 30-odd years I have known him: overnight events, smallish stable, mostly cheap horses built up slowly to what he has now, a few decent stakes colts over the years, not a lot of catch drives, and most of the earnings in Alberta and Saskatchewan. He tried Ontario, with mixed results and never really hit the big times - no Woodbine, Big M, etc. Guys like John Campbell, David Miller, Mike LaChance, et al have far more wins and more millions in purses, but look at the difference in venue, and none of these have their own stables anymore, but rely solely on catch drives.
