Jack F. Graham Passes
May 26, 2005
Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Jack F. Graham, affectionately known as "Big Jack" by friends and family, passed away on May 22.
Graham was inducted in to Canada’s Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1990 in the Builder category and was renowned as one of the largest ever importers of standardbred horses from the United States to Canada.
A native Manitoban, the former car dealer, tack shop owner and ex-army captain made his first venture into racing in 1965 with the purchase of Nellie Adios and then later her daughter Reeds Phalla.
That bloodline produced the winners of over $1 million including Hall of Famer pacer BC Count p, 1:56:2 ($535,023).
In 1971, he made arguably the greatest buy of the decade in an unraced Shadow Wave colt from none other than Joe O'Brien. That colt was $252,069 winner Invincible Shadow p, 1:56.1f, the 1983 U.S.T.A. Aged Pacer of the Year.
Upon the retirement of Invincible Shadow, Graham went into the breeding business in Aldergrove, B.C. but in 1977 shifted to the Ontario market.
Over the next 11 years, Jack offered Ontario breeders a wide assortment of stallions at Shadowland Farms in Vienna, Ontario, which included Invincible Shadow, Dream Maker, Melvins Strike, Major Force, Chiola Hanover, Allwin Steady, Kawartha Skipper, Brisco Hanover and River Captain.
Family will receive friends at the Fraser Heights Funeral Home, 14835 Fraser Highway, Surrey, B.C., 604-589-2559. A visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. on Monday, May 30, followed by a service at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering our condolences to the family and friends of Jack Graham.
