We had a horse entered last night in the first race....Strode's Baba.
He was really good in the receiving barn....was tough to get ready and even tougher in the paddock.
He warmed up well.....was in the number one hole (gate). All of a sudden the number three horse reared slightly which set off dear little "Willy."
Willy reared, the jockey jumped off and then Willy flipped over! He was upside-down in the gate thrashing! I was watching on one of the T.V.s just inside the grandstand when it happened. He somehow righted himself (there is not a lot of room in those gates). When he did, he hit his face on the front of the gate and it pooped open....
So here comes Willy....trotting out of the gate all by himself. He was looking around like, "what do I do now?" Then he broke into a slow gallop and went 3/4 of a mile before the outrider finally caught him. I seriously think he thought he won because he crossed the finish line right in front of us, all by himself. Then he continuted on around the track where the caught him. The state vet said to run him (we thought they would surely scratch him). So the jock got back on and in the gate he went. Would you believe after galloping a mile on his own that dummy ran 4th?
I can only imagine how he would have done if he'd not wasted all that energy!!
Willy ended up with many knicks and cuts, and he broke a tooth...which bleed EVERYWHERE. Today he's quite body sore and feeling all over crappy....but he'll be okay.
Ack...horses......
If anyone is around to watch, we have Clear Title in the 8th race tonight.
