Harrisburg (Dauphin Co.) Agricuture Secretary Dennis Wolff announced that the Standardbred Horse Sales Company posted its highest ever sales last week, with revenue nearing $60 million, during the 63rd Annual Standardbred Auction at the Farm Show Complex.
"Pennsylvania is home to world-class breeding ooperations and some of the best horses in the world," said Wolff. "By attracting thousands of visitors from the U.Sl, Canada and abroad, this sale is a great event to showcase the depth of Pennsylvania's equine inudstry."
More than 2,000 Standardbreds were sold during the six-day event, raising more than $56 million -- $6million more than last year. This year's top priced horse was Western Mac, a yearling, consignbed by Lee and Linda DeVisser of Michigan and purchased by Rich Annupziato of New York for $305,000. The much sought after yearling was fathered by Hanover Shoe Farms top rated sire, Western Hanover.
The largest Standardbred breeding farm in the world, hanover Shoe Farms, cnsigned the largest number of horses during the event, selling 143 horses at an average of $46,285 per horse.
Standardbreds, noted for speed and stamina, are most frequently used in harness racing. Consigners from throughout the U.S. and Canada marketed yearlins and other Standardbreds during the sale. Complete pedigrees and sale results are available online at www.theblackbook.com
AND I discovered the Smarty Jones exhibit at the state museum. Actually, it's about horse racing......flat, steeple, and harness.....but Smarty is featured with a film about him AND his Kentucky Derby trophy.....in a glass case.....just in case some souvenoir hound, ahem, makes off with it ;D ;D ;D
