Superstar trotting stallion King Conch has passed away.
Armstrong Bros. confirmed the sad news with Standardbred Canada this morning.
Conch, the broodmare, was bred by Hugh Grant to Speedy Crown in 1988 and later that year Conch was sold to Thomas Moberg, who exported her to Sweden. King Conch was born in 1989, and returned to North America in March 1990.
Jan Johnson and Berndt Lindstedt first trained King Conch. Later that year, Per Eriksson became responsible for King Conch’s future career. King Conch 2,1:56.2f: 3,1:55.1 $676,285 was syndicated in 1993, and had stood at the Armstrong Bros. Farm during his entire breeding career.
At two, he won the Breeders Crown, and is still the World Record holder on a five-eigths mile track for two-year-old trotting colts with a time of 1:56.2. At three, he won a heat of the Hambletonian, Founders Gold Cup, Review Futurity, Tompkins-Geers, Hanover Hempt and was second in the final of the Hambletonian.
His performers have won $22.8 million with 58 $100,000 earners, 107 in 2:00 and 8 in 1:55. Some of his top performers have included millionaires Casual Breeze 1:53.1 ($1,314,075), In Conchnito 3, 1:54s ($1,027,223) and Corn Cob Conch 1:53.2 ($1,018,606).
King Conch was sent to the veterinary hospital in Guelph, Ont., for colic yesterday afternoon and underwent an exploratory laporotomy. At surgery the problem was not correctable, and he was humanely euthenized. King Conch will be buried at Armstrong Bros.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering sincere condolences to everyone at Armstrong Bros.
