brought rhea in to see what she tolerates, brushed her all over, tied, no problems with feet. put her in her stall and tried on a bridle, this she wasnt thrilled with, flipping her head, really chewing on the bit.... So i take her out in our aisle way (which is very wide) and she starts to jig, bow and flip her neck. I establish being boss mare and we start working on Whoa and Stand.. after a few minutes she calmed down and started listening, stopped dancing around and seemed to get the jist of what i wanted. Then i bring her back into the stall throw on my dressage saddle which she was totally fine with, girth her up no problem and we go back out into the aisle where we worked again on the whoa, stand and added back up all which she did great with.. Since this about all i can do right now with the d&mned snow on the ground, i figure might as well get her used to it for spring

Hey, that's just what I did with Charm the first day! Except I did it in the indoor while there were horses and riders working. So, your saddle fits her, uh?

Actually, i think its a bit too narrow for her lol, my dressage saddle is a regular width, with the pad it fits my other two well, but i think it may be a bit snug on her. Although she is finer boned she seems to be wider through the shoulder/back then my other 2? will have to see when she starts moving around (once i can get her on the lunge line).. She seems really quiet and just goes with the flow. Other then the jigging, but she has only been here less then a day lol

She sounds like a nice sensible gal! By the way I love your latest round of photos and I think Rhea has a beautiful head! Almost a little arabian, don't you think? She is real elegant. So she "needed a home" and you found her through Allie? What was her deal? Looks like an awfully nice horse to be "needing" a home!

the owner contacted allie to help find a home. I received the email from allie.. What happened is the couple does both claiming/racing and breeding.... and older couple... decided they cant do both and decided to downsize their herd. Instead of trying to sell them she finds good homes for them.. Rhea has a yearling filly on the ground that will race next year. Nice people, very concerned about where their horses go. I would imagine she would be a little difficult to sell, especially in this market, she does crib mildly, and she toes in a little (could be she needs a good trim, we'll see next week when the farrier comes) I was shocked when she stepped off the trailer at how nice she was. I was not expecting her to be THAT nice.. Those pics are still not doing her justice though.. Im going to try to get a video of her this weekend and upload that so everyone can see her movement.. Took my breath away when she trotted off into the paddock.

...poor Michelle when Porter stepped off HIS trailer! She was shocked at how BAD he looked so you are dang lucky to be shocked that Rhea is so nice! ANd if her pictures are not good, I can't imagine how much nicer she is.... I think she's beautiful. She might be REAL fun to ride! How tall is she again?

I was told she was 15.2 but i sticked her yesterday and she is just a hair under 16.1 lol (usually its the opposite, they say 16.1 and you get 15.2 lol) I think she will be a bit more spirited undersaddle, but maybe with a lot of ground work she will be just fine. She picks up real quick and settles down nicely in a short period of time

Oh Neeners, Rhea is a beauty... I am so happy for you. They said 15.2 with Red too. I didn't stake him til I got him home... almost 16.1 too! So I have a reach with my short little legs! LOL

Sounds like a good way to start. And that is unusual for them to say she was shorter than she really was. Can't wait for the riding report. :horsie:

She is beautiful! Definitely an elegant head. Sounds like you are off to a great start. Wow, saddled up and everything. This will be fun hearing about you two. :sun: O.K. it's snowing here too, but I'm thinking warmer weather and sun for you.

SMay, The shipper even called me an hour out and warned me how bad the horse looked. The layover barn thought he was a slaughter horse going, or rescued from, and actually called me to see if he was OK, and survived the trip. I had to explain about how sick he was, but I don't think anyone believed me.
I remember saying to the shipper, "Is this the right horse?!" He said, "I hope so, it was a long drive!" He was nice, and really concerned for Porter.
But Porter is finally getting fat ;D I actually think he's taller then I was told too, he's taller then An Lar at least and almost to Nate, so he's about 16'2-16'3 but I'd have to stick him to be sure.
Neeners, how is day 2 coming? She is so gorgeous!

Oh and Sue, i know what you mean about the short legs, even though im 5'8 i have shorter legs, even with the mounting block I have a hard time getting up on my 16.2 gelding cherokee.. I have to use the BIG mounting block to be comfortable.. Molly who just brushes 16h's is even a stretch w/ the normal mounting block.. forget it from the ground lol

I am thinking of putting a saddle on Count, just setting it on his back, to see how he does with that. Then walk him around with it on his back to see how he reacts. He's OK with me taking his blanket on and off of him, if I am going to try to keep him I may as well begin doing SOMETHING with him! I am going to appeal to the lady where I keep him to give me a little time, I can pay some next week and try to make up for it the following weeks. I figured maybe $100 per week between the two horses, I hope she goes for it. These horses are all I have (and my German Shepherd I adopted from a rescue) I need to have that pic posted on the NHR board, he's a beautiful dog!
