Cullen injured in spill
July 22, 2004
Driver Al Cullen is in hospital today recovering from serious injuries incurred during a horrifying spill last night at Windsor Raceway.
According to Windsor officials, Cullen is suffering from four cracked ribs and a collapsed lung after his race bike cracked in half during last night’s sixth race. Cullen, who was driving six-year-old pacer On Cue in the first-over slot, was heavily urging the gelding as the field swung into the stretch. That’s when his race bike split in half. Cullen was thrown to the ground and struck by two horses. No other drivers were dismounted and no horses fell.
Cullen is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. He is supposed to stay in hospital until Tuesday, Windsor officials say.
Cullen is one of Windsor’s top drivers. He has 4,154 wins in his career and has steered the winners of more than $13 million lifetime.

How awful. Why would the bike split like that? Metal fatigue makes them split by the seat. Had one of mine do that in a race.
