Hey Katie! I saw that Varda ran today (I finally figured out that damn virtual stable). Anyway, it said she was fractious in the gate, so just checking to see if she and the jock are ok.
I think Knight's Gumbo runs today as well. That's one of Jen's.

Yeah, everything okay with Varda?
Gumbo ran second tonight. Very good after not racing since december. We claimed the horse who came in 1st. The winner was clearly higher class than running for 5k. He won easily by 11 lengths. Gumbo however, did really well. He should win next time out as long as we don't catch another bear!

Ooh another one to add to my stable. I see that Beaugar is running on the 23rd in an allowance race with a fat purse (hope he wins!) and also that Boy Genius is running for his new trainer.
What is Assumed Risk like? I see he is a chestnut gelding like Toby.

Varda's fine... She's a pain in the TUSH and won't settle down in the gate though.. Then she bled pretty severely... She felt awesome the jock said, he was so disappointed when she had such a problem. I didn't know she was that bad of a bleeder, but oh well. You live and you learn.
But hopefully next time (about 2 weeks from now- she's on antibiotics right now) she'll settle down in the gate and not bleed.
My baby ran today and honestly if I didn't have bad luck I'd have none at all. He reared in the gate, dropped the jockey and broke out, it says he ran 1/8th but he definitely went further than that. He didn't run bad considering that, but jeez. He was so good for his first start, and so good for schooling and has been so good in the gate... It sucks.

So what can you do for bleeding? I've seen a few horses that came off the track with papers marked "bleeder" or something to the effect.
The baby broke out of the gate, ran, then came back to race? He sounds tough! Was the jock ok?

The biggest thing a bleeders needs is time inbetween races. They *should* get a month. If they bled bad, at least 6 weeks for their lungs to heal. If you have a horse who's papers are stamped, that means the vet saw the horse bleed and required a certain amount of time between races or they were not allowed to enter. A lot of the time though, a horse will bleed and it will not come out of their nose. So you don't really know it unless you have them scoped. But you can sometimes tell just by how they perform...and then have them scoped to find out if you were right or not.
There are several drugs that are allowed for bleeding. Lasix, Amacar, Kentucky Red. People use them separate and sometimes all together to help prevent bleeding. I'm sure there is more but I don't know the names.

My trainer tried to put Varda back in for Saturday... I was like, ummm NO. ;D She's going to have quite a bit of time off. We didn't have her scoped and didn't have anything for sure that she bled, but I'm supposing she did simply by the way she ran and when she came back she didn't drink as much. Vet said put her on antibiotics for 5 days and make sure she gets lots of time between this and her next race. So will do. And yeah RR- the baby is kind of tough... He took off, ran some by himself (he must have been saying WHHHEEEE!!!) and then came back to run the real race. Little brat.

Hey, Katie, maybe it's a good sign that he was so jazzed and raring to go, even if he ran his race before he was supposed to. He'll figure it out by his next outing. He looks like a smart boy!
Hope Varda enjoys her R & R.
