Its official, the bill has been signed, we have slots! I'm not sure what to think of this. Of course it's a good thing, it'll greatly improve our purse money. But I cant help but think of the bad things that may happen. One being that my cute, quiet little track will become some big sprawling unfamiliar place. Not that that's technically a bad thing, but I love it like it is. I suppose time will tell.

Hope it works out for the best. I know IL is trying to get slots. Personally, I prefer to bet on the races.

I always had reservations working in an industry that was based on enticing people to waste huge sums of money - especially guys who owe tens of thousands in child support.

Slots are a wonderful thing. It means that horsemen can finally make some money in racing. The purses are rediculously low where there are no slots. It also means that improvements can be made to the track itself without taking away from the purses themselves. It sometimes means tougher competition but I think it's worth it!

Yes, I don't mind the slots and I don't know what the problem is in Maryland. The tracks there could really use the help. The only thing I don't like is that you can get lost at Charles Town trying to weave your way through the slots to get to the track! I know they do it on purpose to tempt you to play, but I am there strictly for the racing and it can be like wandering in a noisy smoky maze trying to find your way out to the track. I don't understand how anyone could find it more fun to sit there feeding money into a machine when they could be watching and betting on live racing - but each to his own

I'm SO EXCITED about the slots. I think its GREAT!!!
Purses will be better, the track 20 minutes away from me will open now and you're right Jen it will make for tougher competition, but that is one thing I don't mind. It will just make everyone get better horses! And make racing much more respectable.

I think my first post came out a lil....wrong. I DEFINITELY think slots are a great thing! Lordy, I watched the stupid Senate and House debate for HOURS over it!! :bangy: I wouldn't have if i wasn't for 'em! I'm not so sure about the tougher competition thing. I think they'll be a slight increase in the competition but honestly Philly's purses are slightly below the surrounding states(save Maryland, and no offense but i dont see to many tough horses down there). So with slots they'll be about even with Delaware and Jersey. Sure, you might get some horses you wouldnt otherwise, but Bob Baffert isn't setting up camp. They said the same thing with Charles Town and I don't see any superstars running down there.

Maybe it will give Monmouth park more incentive to run your way also. I know from what the woman i worked for told me, most that run here go into NY when our track closes.. (thats where my boy went for the winter until monmouth reopened)

I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude (guess I've been around politicians TOO LONG ) It was promoted here as reducing property taxes.........WE'LL SEE. My boss and I were talking about it this morning, and she said a little advertised part of the bill is that school districts can't raise taxes 10% and over unless it's put before the taxpayers (voters). BUT they can raise it 9% WITHOUT A REFERENDUM hmmmmm SO, will that mean school districts raise taxes 9% every year to circumvent this which means taxes in the LONG run go up HIGHER?? The OTHER side of that coin is voters NEVER voting for higher taxes It'll be interesting how that plays out. As for horsemen, I DO hope that it does mean higher purses. Again, I'll keep my verdict on hold. As for Maryland, they sent a bunch up here to DISCOURAGE the General Assembly from passing it. The argument being more gambling addictions Of course, I'm SURE they were also looking it from a revenue standpoint for Maryland.........MORE COMPETITION. Gambling addictions. I know a LOT of people were against it for that reason. Again, my verdict is out. Gambling is probably the SECOND oldest occupation.....hehe.....next to? ? People will bet on whether someone is going to cross the street or not. They just NEED to bet. There's a lady on my bus that goes to Atlantic City periodically to play the slots. So.......so what. Will it cost the state MORE money in the long run providing services to gambling addicts??? I don't know. Guess we'll see. Hope this does everything it says it will do. Funny how legislation that gets passed with all the positive things about it, suddenly reveals not so positive things once it gets implemented.........
