Well, The Babe is spending her days in a stall, and not complaining about it either. X-rays show no broken bones, but they don't show what IS wrong either. I'm just waiting for the vet to suggest ultrasound. He's already gotten my entire horse budget for March and April. Can May's money be far behind?
The lower leg looks almost normal. She walks normally. The hock functions normally. But that hard swelling around the curb hasn't gone down, and there's some softness on the front of the joint, too. Gotta be a sprain or tear in there at least.
We are giving an antibiotic for a little while, on the off chance that there's a puncture we just can't see and some infection is causing the swelling. But I don't see much change after 4 days of that stuff. 2g of Bute every day probably helps as much as anything.
My gut tells me to be patient. Cypress shows no sign of suffering, and the vet says he doesn't think this is "career ending." By the way. Sunflower seeds are a BIG hit. But it takes molasses to get the antibiotic powder down! LOL

How frustrating to not KNOW Jasper sends slobbers to his latest pinup I hope its just one of those 'mystery' things that rights itself... or at least something cheap and short lived

I hate hearing the uncertainty in this Why is it that these weird fluke things have to happen? I hope that it is just a brush with the odd side and that it will turn out to be a normal sort of puncture thing that just took a while to cure given that she is a tb. Please do keep updating us....I've been thinking about you guys. How are YOU feeling through the stress of it?

Thanks for the update Ad. It must be nerve wracking for you not to know for sure what it is, but if the Babe seems ok at the walk and not in pain, that has to cheer you up, right?
So, are you still riding that little QH? Other horses, too? Teaching them some dressage moves? Their owner(s) must be so pleased!
Your post made me remember the sunflower seeds I bought for Rita (who didn't like them at all). I can't remember waht I did with the bag...I want to try them on Charm! She really needs to put on weight and get a better coat...right now she looks like something the cat dragged in LOL.

Uh oh, she's feeling better . I just unwrapped a much less swollen leg. The quilt wrap and polo wrap were soaking wet, so I thought maybe she'd sweat through them. But no. WItnesses saw her kick her bucket and spill half her drinking water on the injured leg. LOL! I guess she decided cold water therapy was a good idea. Apparently she's right! She's flirting shamelessly with one of the more macho geldings, pinning her ears and kicking at the less studly fellow in the stall next door, and generally acting like her cranky old self. If she keeps this up, her luxury lifestyle will soon be over!

Oh, Niaru! Thanks for asking. But no, I haven't been riding at all. I've spent my alloted "barn time" fussing over Cypress. The weather's been discouraging, too. And I hate to admit it, but I don't have any of the usual aches and pains I feel when I am riding regularly! I'll soon get used to this sedentary lifestyle
As for Jasper's slobbers, Claire LV....The Babe is currently in that frame of mind where she thinks such attention is her due!

well Im glad to hear the xrays were normal, its a reliefe but its still so frustrating not knowing whats really up. Tango is also spending her days in her stall until her cuts are healed up enough that I am sure they wont open up acting like the but she always does when shes out. I still dont know what kinda stunt she pulled to cuase so much damage and it bugs the heck outa me not knowing ...Give the antibiotics a couple more days to work, they have to kick in if theres something going on. I have Tango on them also cause she has a few puncture type wounds and we arent taking any chances, so far so good. All I have to do to get the bute and antibiotic down is mix it in a small handful of her feed which has sunflower seeds I mix in and she gobbles all her meds down really nicely , shes not picky about much if its got her seeds and some carrots. The weather here is horrible, its actualy snowing and iceing right now ewwww. Hope Cypress improves soon and all is well.....hang in there winters almost over.

Glad nothing's broken. I'm sure she'll be fine. Still waiting for Zen's abscess to work it's way out. He's more lame than he's been all week, even with the Bute. Poor boy, but I'm still soaking his hoof with Epsom salts and hoping it comes out soon, if it's going to come out.

Glad to hear Cypress is feeling better, although it sounds like she may be causing havoc in her stall now! I know it's hard to wait, but often time heals.

Glad to hear Cypress is doing better... infection will cause swelling so Cypress might have been fighting off something and legs swelled. Red's leg swelling had nothing to do with his leg he had a puncture wound in his throatlatch area from doing one of his famous snowriver slides/falls..... face first. Of course he shredded his new blanket also.

Cypress the Babe's diva-like behavior while stalled! Glad to hear she is apparently on the mend. Legs and feet injuries/problems are so incredibly frustrating. Maybe the antibiotics are taking care of something hidden? I am sure she will be ready to go by good riding weather. (waving hands in a mystical fashion to send my wishes her way....)
