She is s a mess with a very deep cut along her back cannon bone but nothing major seems to be injured that we can tell right now. Theres only localized heat along the cut and a couple of the long bigger scrapes and the swelling is limited too so thats a very good thing. She has lots of scrapes and small cuts up and down both legs inside and out. This didnt happen today, it happened yesterday at some point sopposedly while she was outside. They seen it when they took her in late am after I was there. We havent been leaving any horses out longer then 1/2 hr at a time and only 2 horses are out at a time together cause the pastures are so icey, they are very bad so i havent wanted her out to long. No one called me at all yesterday or last night althou they said they tried all day till 10pm, I was home aside from the barn pretty much all day and all night besides the fact my machine is on all the time. They should have at least got the vet out there right way, I dont know what they were thinking. They cleaned out the cut last night and put something on it but just didnt call me. The vet wont stitch her up now cause it has been over 8 hours since it happened, I called another vet too but he wouldnt do it either on a leg wound like this. He gave her a tetnus and an antibiotic shot plus some bute but thats all he can do now. The cut is deep but its a clean cut so we are hopeful it will heal up ok, its gonna scar pretty good I think thou. I have to hand walk her the next week or 2 15-20 minutes 3 times each day, she has to stay in her stall at least a week maybe 2 and I have to clean and medicate 3 times a day and keep a tight wrap on it to help it close up and keep it clean. There are several smaller cuts and nasty scrapes all over both back legs inside and out but they will be ok open with some medicine on them. She is pretty sore but she is baering weight, walking with only a small limp on the leg with the biggest cut and nothing else seems involved thank God. I had it flushed out by the time the vet came and there was very lil bleeding but I could tell she was bleeding pretty good last night and maybe earlier today even, why the heck I trusted them to take care of her while Im not feeling well I dont know, I am such an idiot I cant believe it. Since Ive been sick they have been feeding her either am or pm feedings when I havent been there. If I had been there last night to feed she would have been able to get the stitchs or maybe even early this am. I am kicking myself in the rear big time for this and it is my fault that I wasnt there, I will be there from now on like I always was and I dont care if I have to drag my butt outa bed to do it. The vet is going to come back out tomorow to check up on her again and give her another antibiotic shot. He wants to see her fast walk or maybe even trot to be sure she is not lame anywhere. She was a doll the entire time we poked at her and cleaned her up, I knew a few times while we were checking inside the cut for foriegn objects that it really hurt her she was so good, poor baby did great. I was in tears half the time feeling so bad and guilty and really just kicking myself that this happened. I just wish they had called me or the vet to stitch her up, now we have to be so careful about it healing. Im not mad that it happened just that they were so stupid and didnt call in a vet yesterday, horses get hurt everyday and thats why we have vets to be called. The vet said to think about seeing a lawyer cause I do have a contract that says the barn has to contact me or my vet if immediate medical attention is needed and he says it was definately needed, no ifs about that and they knew it. He took some pictures and said if I want them for a laywer just let him know and he will write out a statement also. I dont think I should do anything while she is still there thou. If anything happens and we dont get our farm for any reason I am moving her out of there asap. I dont see any problems thou with our place so in a month and a 1/2 she is out of there definately. I want her out now but theres nothing I can do about it now, I dont have any more board money to spend, buying the farm is going to tap us dry. Vet will be back out tomorow to check again that everything looks ok but I think everything is besides the cuts. I am going to investigate her pasture in the morning and see if I cant figure out what happened, last i checked all the fencing was ok and nothing to get hurt on. Where ever she got hurt I should be able to tell since the ground is all white and there will definately be some sort of blood in the ice and snow. Not that its going to help her now but I want to know and make sure no one else gets hurt. Thank you everyone for the thoughts and prayers, I think they work since it could have easily been so much worse. the first thing I thought after I got the call and before I left was posting here cause I think ex-racer prayers really work and I was right, its nothing very serious...thank you all.

Tina, I agree with your vet, check into a lawyer and just talk to him about the situation. Don't file a retainer or anything until you know the facts, and look for an equine attorny. Not many lawyers out there know horse law. I am sending warm fuzzies to you and Tango and I hope she heals fast and well. I too have a horse named Tango, although he is not a Tbred, he is a Kentucky Mountain Gaited Gelding, Ummmmm maybe after your Tango is better the 2 could get together for a date!

I was over just as it was getting light this morning, walked her a few minutes and fed her. She seems to be ok mentaly and is in good spirits and definately didnt hurt her appetite any LOL. I didnt unwrap her since I couldnt really see to well but from what I could tell there is no new swelling and there is only a lil heat in spots. She is still walking with a small limp on the leg thats cut up the worst but its not to bad and she doesnt seem all that sore, maybe a lil more then yesterday but she was standing all night so she is most likely stiff in that leg. I am meeting the vet over there at about 9:30 just so he can check on the worst cuts for infection and give her another antib shot. I think in a couple weeks she will be back to her normal nutty self and I am thrilled that she made a mess of herself without doing any major damage to anything important. Im sorry about that huge, rambling post I did before, I was so stressed and exhausted that I didnt realize it till it was too late .....I promise to not do that again for a long long time LOL....thanks everyone for the prayers and thoughts, like I said for some reason exracer prayers really do work magic.

Glad to hear Tango is better.... Red had a nasty cut in the pasture and I found him on a Saturday with a 8" gash and a 2" cross gash on his cannon last November after I moved him to the barn. It was bad and looked like he got caught in something. Can you get some silvadene (spelling may be off)? It helps the healing of tissue and to minimize scar tissue. You want to make sure you don't get proud flesh. I had some left over from my hand when it was all cut up and I don't have scars either... Just a suggestion. :horsie:

Glad to hear she is doing better. And please ramble on anytime! Dancer's dam, Misty, tore her hind cannon up in barb wire when she was 10 yrs. old. We *surmise* that she had been kicking at the other horse that was with her and put her leg through the fence and pulled It was pretty nasty-down to the bone and could not be stitched. Well, 5 years later, she began her eventing career and never looked back! Yes, the scar was ugly, but it never bothered her. Sending healing wishes to tango (and her mom).

Who knows how horses do these things! Sometimes you never DO find out what happened..or can't figure it out. But if she's eating fine and looking bright eyed....I think you will find that TBs heal nicely from cuts and boo boos....even on the legs... Watch her closely for infection or proud flesh, and if she doesn't get those, she should be fine a few weeks - especially if the vet thinks there's no tendon involvement - that's GREAT!

Sorry she got cut up so bad but it sounds like she will heal OK. When I had Madeline in Maryland, she gashed open her neck and I didn't know about it until it was too late to stitch up. The groom for the race barn next store gave me this mixture (it was orange, I think it was probably sulfur and preparation H)-he didn't know what it was and he gave it to me in a bute jar. Anyway, I hosed out the wound twice a day and packed this stuff in and she doesn't even have a scar-you can't even tell where the cut was. This thin was about 2 inches long and gaping open. Hope she feels better soon!

Glad she'll be OK. Leg cuts are very hard to stitch.. there isn't much if any muscle along the cannon bone, just skin... stitching it doesn't always hold... I've treated some awful horse wounds on the lower leg without getting stitches and they've healed up fine. Horses have an amazing ability to get hurt no matter how safe we try to keep them, but they have an equally amazing ability to heal themselves.
flushing the wound with water twice a day is the best thing you can do for it. You want some granular tissue to fill in the cut. that will look gross, but it's supposed to be there.. it's kind of nature' s bandaid. But you don't want too much of that tissue or it becomes proud flesh... You also want a compression bandage. that prevents too much granulation and does more for lower leg wounds than stitching.
She'll be OK

Glad to hear she's gonna be fine. Ya know what, no matter how much you try to protect them, they will find a way to hurt themselves from time to time anyway. Just one of the joys of horse ownership.

Breathing a sigh of relief! So glad to hear it's not as bad as it could have been. One the horses out where my Tango is boarded cut her lower leg really badly last year. They never did figure it out, even after walking the pasture several times. Sometimes these things just happen. Try not to beat yourself up too badly, afterall, you are PAYING them...it seems like picking up the phone (to call you and/or the vet) isn't asking that much. I don't think it's YOUR fault all.
And don't your worry about that rambling, that's why we're here!
Hugs to you and Tango.

What a frightening episode and a huge sigh of relief that it looks like she'll be o.k. What a sweetie she is. My horse just about took the side of his knee off (two weeks after taking the bandages off the other leg for bone chip removal) and I learned how to bandage an entire leg. He looked so cute with an entire shocking pink or green leg - I alternated for mood . I duct taped everything I could see in his paddock that might have been the culprit. Never found it. The compreshion bandaging was great and I used something from the vet when it got to the granual stage. It took forever to get to that point and I began to worry it would never heal. Once it got there and I could put magic stuff on, it healed sooo fast. -I'll have to see what it was.
