My barn in Madison OH has just had the first confirmed care of Herpes....one horse has died. We are over four hours away from U. Of Findlay and over 3 hours away from OSU. No horses have come into our barn since November. Noone has been to any other barns near where these two school are. PLEASE be careful about moving horses in and out of your barns! Get them vaccinated asap!!!! My mare was stalled next to the horse that died. I need some good thoughts from everyone please! No other horses in our barn are showing any signs. The one that died only had neurological signs. He was fine in his stall munching hay and then less than an hour later her was throwing himself all over his stall. By early morning he could no longer stand.
Laura.....I NEED an update on Laddie ASAP. Our barn has been locled down to find out where this started. Owners are not even allowed in the barn. Quaranteen is up March 10th. I can't even visit my horse until then.
Everyone else....I need you help! I am looking for the owners of the horse I sold back in NOvember called "Simon." Some of you might remember him. I don't have the new owner's contact info anymore. His registered name is HR Sniffer. They are somewhere in OH I believe. He's 7 years old, bay with white on his face and around 16.2 hands tall. I need to find out his status asap. Thank you all!

Jenarby, good thoughts for sure. Very scary, sounds like they are doing the best they can for the horses there and in the area as well. The roughest part has got to be not being able to see your horse. Jingling that curb chain.

Herpes? Wow! I had no idea. How do horses contract it?Do they know how the horse got it? I didn't even know there was a vaccine!
How hard it must be to know that one horse got so sick, and then not be able to go check on your horse. Hang in there, it'll be a long couple of weeks, but hopefully it will be over before you know it.

This outbreak is just horrible. I will say many prayers for you and those at your barn. You must be absolutely terrified. And the thoughts of not being able to be there with your horse must be driving you crazy.

OMG jenarby! How awful. My thoughts are with you. A big hug and prayers for all the horses.
That is it I am getting shots ordered today. I don't think this is a good year to move horses at all anywhere.

I did a ton of research last night on EHV-1 Apparently once a horse has entered the neuro stage it is no longer contageous. This horse that died NEVER showed any viral signs. One minute healthy, next minute he looked like he was tranqed. Aslo, I read that the live vaccine can be harmful to a horse who has been exposed or how has an immune system that is suspect. Please talk to your vets before shooting up your horses. My biggest concern with vaccinated my mare is that last year she was treated for EPM. I'm afraid that this shot might make her sick. So I'm crossing my fingers. The vet should be at the barn right now giving shots. Also read that OSU is recommending 3 weeks quarantine. They said that the virus is only infectious for 1 week. I had heard 2 weeks. But they said that doing that for 21 days is best. Our barn is shut down until March 10th which will be 30 days.

That IS so scary...I hope your horse won't be infected. Some horses recover, tho, right?
This hits a nerve in me too, because Charm hasn't had her shots yet (they don't vaccinate at the track) and the vet can't come until March 15th...so I'll be hoping for the best until then...

Wow! That is frightening. Don't you wish you could have the owners install a camera so you could at least check on your horse? I'm crossing my fingers all goes well for you. We have had a wierd cold/flu virus hit our stables and one horse ended up with a nice week at the vet and its glands lanced. We don't know what it is. The horses in the barn where I keep mine have not come down with the virus and we've been really careful with keeping them away from the others. Groups stabled on each side of us got it. I think I'll ask about the herpes vaccination. Its hard to know what to do with all this stuff.

Luci, I was told that if your horse is ill....or has a suppressed immune system...that vaccinating with Pneumabort could very well cause your horse to get the virus because it is a live strain vaccine. Just an FYI, please ask your vet.....

I heard that OH State and another vet hospital had to be closed and quarantined for disinfecting, that Findlay is still closed and that some of the horses that had travelled in and out for different events had come as far as MO. Mind you, this is strictly heresay, but I also heard that the the virus has a transmittal range of 15 ft., that it can't be carried on clothing, but can be transfered by horses sneezing in the vicinity of another, so they don't have to be touched. How off do you think that info is? I don't know how I would feel about bringing my animals to Equine Affaire this year.

The virus can be carried on clothing. That's why students at findlay were not allowed to go from the english farm to the western farm and vice versa. I was actually told that it can travel up to 30 feet in the air.....

O my gosh!!! That is terrifying news! Please trust that you have HUGE BARRELS of good thoughts heading your way. If you can't go see your horse are they updating you? How often? I would be a nervous wreck...and sort of am. We have so many in Ohio...and I know it can spread out from there.....
Thanks at least for passing on the knowledge that you have. Good luck and please keep us posted!

Just an update from my barn..... All the horses are doing fine. There has not been a single sniffle or anything. So keep jingling those chains and knocking on wood! If anyone is interested..... I have a friend who went to the seminar tonight. She called me with tons of notes and Q & A. She's going to be typing up her notes and emailing them to me in the next couple of days. If there's interest when I get the info I can post it here or I can email it to you all. Please post if you are interested or not. Also if you have specific questions fire away, I might have heard answers to them tonight.
