A girl that I know just had 4 NZ TBs imported. She received them at her barn on Saturday, and these 4 were part of a group of 15 that were shipped over from NZ. Anyway, when they got to the quarantine facility, the horses are supposed to be washed down with a chlorine and water solution. Some dumbass (excuse my language) poured straight chlorine on all 15 horses, which of course resulted in chemical burns, and various other eye and breathing problems. One of her horses is so badly chemically burned that he will probably never have much hair on one side of his body. Luckily, the girl's trainer fell in love with him and offered to buy him from her. Can you believe someone was that stupid?? Now it is just a waiting game to see if these guys will be sound enough (in their breathing) to compete at the high levels that they were purchased for, and were currently competing at before this happened. The people at the quarantine facility have paid for all of the vet bills and everything, but they should at least do that. I don't see them wanting to cough up the $20k per horse if they don't come sound though.

Geez, I just read this! How could someone be so stupid! And how could anyone proceed with drenching 15 horses with pure chlorine, after doing the first one....the person's OWN eyes would be burning, hands slippery, lungs overcome with fumes......

This was all told to me by my friend's mother on Saturday, and they had received their horses at 3am that morning and were still in a bit of shock. They knew what had happened since the horses were under vet care and couldn't leave the quarantine facility when they should have, but they had no idea of the full extent of it. The transportation people also filled them in on the the other horses that were in the shipment. From what she said, Lauren's horses faired better than some of the others. Like you I'm thinking there must have been some sort of dillution, but maybe it just wasn't enough water, or something? I still can't believe it happened. These people get horses in from other countries everyday.

That's horrible. I'd be furious and insist on giving those involved the same treatment.
