I just got this from my dear friend Stefanie. Her mare is an ex-racer and she bred her last year to Landkonig.
I am really in need for some prayers/jingles or whatever! for my mare who is 322 days now. I got a phone call sunday at 1 am that she had been badly hurt and could have possibly broken her leg. I get out to the barn and her knee is (no kidding) the size of a volleyball with a huge gash on the inside and her entire leg swollen from the knee down. She could barely walk at all---it was everything I could do to get her back out of the stall to start cleaning it up. I put a very loose wrap over it so no more dirt could get in there and gave her some bute hoping for the best. (I tried reaching my vet and couldn't so I hoped Bute was OK for a mare this far along) Vet came out next morning 6am to take x rays/ give antibiotics and poor mare can hardly move at all at this point and wasn't eating anything. I cold hosed her about 30 min and she was able to move a little.
The vet wrapped her from hoof all the way up her leg and took xrays. The bad part is that she is almost sure that the cut went through into the joint capsule--meaning a severe risk of infection. Unfortunately the xrays didn't come out and she said it is still too swollen to get a good ultrasound.
I am devastated....this mare had a similar injury to her other leg last year that cut the tendon sheath and required a month of hospitilzation and intense treatment with several antibiotics. I truly almost lost her. I know if there is anyone that can help her my vet is the one, but now what about the baby---we're two weeks away from 340 days and I'm scared to death. I told the vet that I didn't want to wait even one day to start the antibiotics because that was part of the problem with the last injury--we waited almost 7 days to start them.
The vet said if she is not significantly better by this afternoon (at least the swelling part) then I will have to bring her to the clinic where she will stay--probably until she foals.
I have never asked for prayers or jingles but I feel like I really need them now for Miko and her baby. I don't know what I would do if I lost them.
