Where would it be based out of...if it was the new Texas CANTER? Would it be near you Christi? That would be fun to help volunteer, but when would YOU have time! hahaha No way. Still...I always thought the photographing and describing of horses on the track would be the funnest thing to help with. I'm way far from Thistledown in Cleveland, where our Ohio CANTER is based, so I haven't helped out. If they need help at Beulah in Columbus, then I'm READY AND WILLING! tee hee

I guess there are 3 areas that CANTER could be located, but Sam Houston already has an adoption program (where the lovely King came from), so Houston is out. I'm thinking it will probably be in the Austin area. What do you think Christi?
I know of a trainer in Texas who send horses to the Texas and Louisiana tracks. They are really nice horses. We have 2 of his, and they were so easy to retrain. When he brings them in from the track, they hack them on his farm between races. Anyway, hopefully he will list some of his. I'm sure he would if approached since he will call when he has some that he is taking off of the track.

Yep, Sam Houston already has their program, which is wonderful and I highly recommend them. Austin doesn't have a track, but they are just over an hour away from Retama. King actually came from Retama, even though I heard about him from the Sam Houston program. And finally, we do have LoneStar Park here in the Dallas area. Lots of nice horses there. If they do have a coordinator at that track, we'd have some mighty nice pickin's for our CANTER horses. ;-) I'll have to send Allie an email when I get a chance. I'd be glad to help them get started. There is so much to do! I'm happy to contact barns in the Dallas area to help build the Horses Wanted list. So exciting! Christi

OH duh, I was thinking Retama was in/near Austin. Aren't there some small tracks around the San Antonio/ Austin area as well?
I think I could definitely help to add to the Horses Wanted list.
Has CANTER ever considered posting ex-racing QHs? I was just curious since it seems that QH racing is fairly big here too.

Retama is in San Antonio. Austin used to have a tiny QH track (Manor Downs?), but they were planning to shut it down the last I heard. It was not a great place...
I don't know of any other tracks in that area...Just Retama. I think there could be some very minor tracks in West Texas. There are a few just over in South Louisiana (Delta Downs is the closest to TX, I think), and don't forget Louisiana Downs in Bossier City -- in NW Louisiana.

Here is some info that was on COTH.
If your interested in helping out-send an email to Joanne Normile who is the contact person for the Michigan Site-just click on the Contact me and it will go to her-she also is the head Director for all of the Canter programs and she can forward your emails to the 2 gals that are heading up the program in TX. I believe one of the gals if not both of them were volunteers with Illinois Canter Site. I dont have the contact info. or I would post it here.
I knew there were tracks in LA, Delta, Evangeline, and Bossier, but I wasn't sure if they would fall under the CANTER TX umbrella. It would be cool if they did.
I think read something about CANTER-TX maybe being up at Lonestar. I'm not near any of those venues, but would love to help out somehow.

Here is some info that was on COTH. I believe one of the gals if not both of them were volunteers with Illinois Canter Site. This isn't accurate as far as I know. We've only had 4 volunteers for IL thus far - two in Chicago, our webmaster and myself here at Fairmount. As far as I know, we're all still here. (Although I have new volunteers in the works right now for Fairmount to give me some h-e-l-p.) The Exec. Director will be a former volunteer from WV - one of Allie's friends, I believe. Look to the CANTER main site at canterusa.org for more info as it becomes available! And S. May - I believe Ohio *is* operating out of Beulah now as well - check the site for contact info for Nancy Scott if you are interested in helping there.

If anyone is still interested.....Sam Houston Race Park. Starting with only Trainers listings and available by the end of March. Adding the listing to the canterusa.org board soon.

I'm about 3 hours from Sam Houston, but I would still love to help with something. The fact that I'm looking for a horse has nothing to do with it... Just kidding, but seriously I would like to help. I couldn't drive out there very often at all due to my schedule, but if you guys needs anything that can be done from here, let me know. I would be more than happy to answer e-mails or something, anything.

Hi everyone! My name is Lynn and I am the Exec Director for CANTER of Texas. I am very excited to announce that CANTER of Texas will be based at Sam Houston Race Park, and we plan to launch on Feb 22!!! The current TB meet at Sam Houston Race Park ends March 31 (and starts again in November). So we are already taking Horses Wanted information in order to hit the ground running! For more information on the program, please email me at cantertx@canterusa.org.

The current TB meet at Sam Houston Race Park ends March 31 (and starts again in November). So we are already taking Horses Wanted information in order to hit the ground running! For more information on the program, please email me at cantertx@canterusa.org. Well, welcome LynnR!! (you might want to note that when you post here, as we already have 3 Lynn's!!) I'm Keely, the Fairmount Park Coordinator in IL. (We're kind of "split" into 2 sections because of the long distance between our tracks in IL.) Sounds like you've come in at SH with a real bang and with the end of the meet coming up, you have a chance to make a wonderful impression on the horsemen - the end of the meet is typically CRAZY for listing horses. You've got a long road ahead of you (as I'm sure you already realize) and you'll long for the times when you didn't have 37 emails to answer every day, put more miles on your car than the local pizza delivery joint's Employee of the Month, or a long distance bill in an amount that will rival that of Imelda Marcos' shoe budget.... and the days when you actually had some sort of life of your own - these times all henceforth referred to as a time period of "B.C." - Before CANTER. But it is all sooooooo worth it in the end - makes you sleep really well at night - partially from exhaustion!! Congratulations and here's to a successful break from the gate! Feel free to stop by anytime you have news you want to get out, horses in special need, volunteer requests - whatever. The girls (and guy) here are all very supportive of CANTER and they've helped make wonderful things happen for many, many CANTER horses! We're in the process of *possibly* changing over to this forum permanently, but the final decision hasn't been completely voted on yet - so keep an eye here and at the other board for a while until we get things settled. Miss Allie also pops in here now & then, when she isn't being all snooty and spending all her time on other boards.
