I'm reposting this here so everyone can respond on the new board. From Niaru:
Subject: Rita passed away today
She bravely hopped all the way outside, then calmly stood looking up at the stars on that cold and clear night when the vet put her down. The people at the barn were great, and Rita was never alone up to the end, some of the kids settled in her stall, brushed her, fed her alfafa (she loved THAT!) and just kept her company so she wouldn't lay down, she was SO tired. SHe will always be in my heart, she was such a brave, sweet, willing little mare. I want to thank you all, my cyber-family, for your support. And I owe it to Rita to help another ex-racer, some day.

Hugs to you and everyone at your barn at this sad time. You and Rita have been in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sad to hear of your loss, but I know that Rita is in a better place with no pain. I am sure Rita knew how much you loved her. If you need anything, let me know.

Nothing seems good enough cause I know you loved that mare so much. You did the right thing to help her though. It's not fair for a horse to suffer, and she is over the bridge now and grateful. I hate that this had to happen to you. No one deserves that kind of pain and I hope you can focus on the future some day soon. Rita was such a great horse. Lets just think of her romping in horse heaven cause that is the best image I can come up with at this tough time. My favorite poem for you:
"Somewhere, somewhere, in time's own space There must be some sweet, pastured place, Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow, some paradise where horses go. For by the love that guides this pen, I know great horses live again."

Oh Claire! How sad! I think she's up in Heaven with Shorty playing race horse games and eating green grass. I'm so sorry!

I am so terribly terribly sorry for this. Please know that you are still in my thoughts. I was so hoping for better news. I'm glad you were able to be with her and papmer her until the end. Perhaps she met Shortfat over the bridge and she's running on perfect legs.
Let me know if there is ANYTHING at all that I can do.

I am so sorry. I had a feeling last evening when there was no news that it was going to be this way. Niaru, know that you did everything that you could & that you made the right decision for Rita. She's not in pain anymore and I'm sure she knew you loved her very much. We are here if there's anything we can do for you & know you are in all of our thoughts.
