My kitten is due to be spayed tomorrow morning, but she has been in heat for the past two days. She seems to be coming out of it (THANK GOD!!), but should I change her surgery day? The vet says they'll do it for $20 extra, but some internet vets say it shouldn't be done during a heat. Anyone...?

Most vets around here (at least the ones that didn't take the Advanced Billing courses) will do a cat in heat for no extra charge. The surgery is a little slower, because of some swelling of the ovaries and uterus, but not that much slower. 20 bucks is a heck of a charge for an additional 5 minutes.

Yeah, well, it seems anymore that a vet will charge you extra for every little thing. If I'm lucky she'll be completely out by then... At least today she can walk across a room without doing her little "heat dance" the whole way!

You could try to re-schedule but since cats do not have a set cycle, it would probably be hit or miss. At the hospital I worked at, the vets would still do the surgery but, as mentioned, for a higher fee, due to blood vessels etc. being enlarged. I was just about to make an appointment for my newest barn kitty and she came into heat last week...Arghhhh
