Ways to tell if there are new posts since your last visit, loading times, etc.,
1) Click "last 10 messages". You can post a reply to what you see there directly from that screen, or click on the underlined title of the thread right above the post.
2) If you are logged in, you can tell at a glance which posts have new topics since you last read them - there will be a little icon that shows that there have been new posts since your last visit.
3) The most recent posts are noted in the far right hand column when viewing. Posts that have recently been posted to move up to the top - the same threads can be kept going for days or weeks this way. It shows you whether or not it has been added to that day, or since your last visit. If you reply to a post on a previous page - no matter how far back, the action of posting in the thread brings it back to the first page so that others can see that another post has been made. Nothing is ever "lost forever".
4) When you click on a topic, to go directly to the bottom of the page, where the most recent posts are, you can simply press the key on your keyboard that says "End". This takes you to the bottom of the page in front of you. You can also make use of the "Page Down" key- this will move you only to the next amount of text that will fit on the screen. There are actually LESS clicks to read a thread on this board than on the other style of board - you can read 10 posts with one click - nine fewer than a thread with 10 posts on the other style (and 9 fewer pages to load).
5) Make sure that you are using the latest version of browser available for your software. If you still have trouble getting the board to load, email your specs - your computer, what browser you are using, are you on dial up, etc., to myself or Christi and we will see what we can do to help.
6) If you don't want to have to log in each time you access the board, choose the option on the log in page that says "always stay logged in".
If you have any other questions about the functioning or use of this board that you would like to see addressed, post them in this thread and we will be putting together an FAQ section with what you all want to know. We are also going to investigate activating a script that will allow you to post photos directly from your computer.
re: Grumblings about the board:
We are doing EVERY SINGLE THING we possibly can to make this community accessible to EVERYONE. I've said this before and I'll say it again now, the software or server does not make the community, the participants do. Whatever type of forum is made available to you is what you choose make of it. If anyone has any OTHER suggestions that cover all of the problems that our population/posting explosion has brought up that will make every one happy and no one excluded - feel free to offer them up. Everyone must be able to access and participate, regardless of their computer's abilities and their available time to participate on the board. In other words, posts must stay available for participation for more than 12-16 hours, pop-ups can't knock people off & lock up computers and older computers must be able to access. Loading time must be at least reasonable. There must be room for NHR chat of any type, as well as room for HR posts to be addressed. To be ad free (as this board is) it must be either at a very low cost or someone needs to be willing to pay for it (keep in mind that ad free boards can run SEVERAL HUNDREDS of $$$ a year - or month even - in some cases, depending upon the traffic).
We ask that, in mean time, that you please at least try to give this place a shot and explore the different ways of navigating the posts. I think that you'll find with a little time and experience, you'll see how easy it really is and after getting used to it you'll find threaded-style message boards to actually be very cumbersome to navigate. Please remember, it is priority for us that everyone to be able to participate, have a good time, and not be left out or else we wouldn't be going through all this. We don't want anyone leaving by choice, but we really don't know what else to do - suggestions are welcome.
