Hello Everyone,
Aftertheraces will be retired in a couple of weeks so I was asked to transfer some of the better threads here . Terrie emailed me and said it would be fine (thank you!) and I think most of you will enjoy this one for sure. Originally started by Melissa (teachU2ride):
Thought it would be fun to remember some of the top OTTBs. Feel free to add!
Idle Dice, partner of Rodney Jenkins
Jet Run, partner of Michael Matz
For the Moment, partner of Lisa Jacquin
Keen, partner of Hilda Gurney
Night Owl, partner of George Morris
Dr. Peaches, partner of Bruce Davidson
J.J. Babu, partner of Bruce Davidson
Jill Henneberg and Nirvana II bought OTT for $600, 96 olympics
Nick Larkin and Red bought OTT for $900. Won the 4* rolex in 98, short listed for 2k olympics.
Bill Steincraus and Snowbound - show jumping hall of fame... won the first individual medal for a US rider in 1968 came from the track in the early 60's
all were exracehorses bought off the meat market.... i think their stories are so cool... as is this thread
i also just love that you included idle dice. another fave. whenever i go for a big release over a big fence i chuckkle and think "rodney jenkins moment"
MTA: i'm a moron. i just re read it! where is my brain???
I remember For The Moment...loved that horse.
Let's not forget Poggio II, Amy Tryon's **** partner
On a side note, look at the photo of George Morris...and then imagine what he would write about his position in his PH column...:Smilie Censored Word 12:
This is another photo from the same class (GHM on Night Owl, winning the Grand Prix of Aachen in 1960). Hard to argue with the style over such an enormous fence!
It's so fun to see all the famous OTTBs!
Might Tango, Bruce Davidson's stunning grey gelding
Finvarra, the chestnut gelding on the '84 Olympic gold medal USA event team, ridden by Torrance Watkins (Fleishmann)
Out and About, (JC name Judge Tomasiello), won the individual bronze for USA with Kerry Milliken in the '96 Olympics
3 Magic Beans, team bronze medal for USA at '00 Sydney Olympics with Nina Fout, was a steeplechase cast off:
No discussion about the thoroughbred influence on eventing would be complete without mentioning the great Babamist:
Babamist started with a career in steeplechase, then foxhunted and evented, and most importantly, went on to sire numerous upper level event horses including Little Tricky, Heyday, Mystic High, Snowy River and My Turn amongst others.
Grand Prix show jumpers:
Chase the Clouds, JC name Doma Due, grey gelding ridden by Leslie Burr
Anne Kursinki's brilliant mount Eros is an Australian bred thoroughbred who raced in that country:
Untouchable, Kathy Kusner's USET mount:
Sinjon, USET jumper ridden by George Morris, Bill Steinkraus, and Kathy Kusner:

I don't have a picture of him but Seattle Slew is my all time favorite "old" Thoroughbred. He won the Triple Crown when I was a sophmore in high school. Back then I was the only one who really cared about horses and I was swept away by his beauty and strength. I was so awed by him that I even wrote a letter to our city's newspaper about him. It was published in the paper and I so much wish that I could remember even one sentence that I had written. I was watching some old racing videos of him yesterday and I just cried. The best part of it all is that now I have one of his granddaughters and I couldn't be more thrilled. If he is anything like her, he really and truly was even more amazing than I ever thought he was!
You're right - Slew was fabulous! But these are TBs who were famous for what they did AFTER the track.
