My little unicorn is now free from his body and hopefully running with the wind. He's had a great last week with lots of visitors and treats. This morning he and Mikhail ate breakfast together from the same tub, then shared their hay and nuzzled all over each other. He walked proudly to the spot I chose under the tree and had fun eating his carrots and being fussed over. The vet nearly did me in saying how much better he looked, glossy coat, good weight, etc but it was time. All was well until he had to stick that huge vein thing in his neck which obviously hurt. In hindsight and for any of you in the future, give the animal a painkiller first. Anyways, it was only a minute or so for the whole process which seemed like hours and he went down quick - I'm pretty sure he was gone before he even hit the ground. The other horses watched everything so I'm pretty sure they know he's gone. I was going to take each one of them out there so they could smell him and know what's happening but I think they know. His body isn't leaving until tomorrow morning so if they fuss tonight then I''ll take them out. I couldn't handle it after he was gone so my girlfriend and my neighbor who were over covered up his body and cleaned up the barn and got things in order for me while I disappeared for a bit. Hubby said goodbye to him last night and this morning but couldn't handle being around for the euthanization and took off. The kids went out this morning before school and said goodbye. My youngest is already whining about wanting another pony. I've been saying goodbye for the last couple of weeks. I made him promise to come see me in my dreams and to ride with us in the woods. He was a galant little guy and will be so sadly missed.

Vida, a big hug for you and fond farewells to the noble Augie. You did everything for him compassionately. Be kind to yourself today. --A

God bless you for keeping his well being in mind. He is free now and well, hopefully he likes cats as my Kelly probably met him at the bridge to say hi.

I know you thought about this for a long time and it was a brave decision. Hopefully Augie is running around with perfect feet and no more pain.

Vida, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm crying with you after reading your beautiful post. It's a very difficult desicion you've had to make. Know that you did what right for him and he's comfortably waiting on the other side of the rainbow bridge. Hugs to you and your family.

Vida, thank you for saving him from his previous life and giving him so many good days. I am sorry that he had to leave but, I know he is out of all pain. I hope you realize how much you improved his life and let him die with dignity. His picture in my window sill will stay for a few more days to remind me how we each can improve an animals life. It's our job to not make them keep on keeping on- to help them let go. That's why we are the people and they are the animals. I'm sure he already knew what was up. He was ready.

Boy , I never thought you'd be able to do it either. That really takes guts - you're a stronger woman than I for sure. But I bet the little guy is running around full speed in heaven now... Hope my big guy "Swaps" is up there greeting him...he enjoyed having his little white pony on earth, so I'm sure he'll enjoy having one in heaven!

Oh Vida, I'm heartbroken for you. I know it was time for Augie, but it doesn't make it easier . We all know that this is part of the 'deal' of having horses, but it's so hard...(((hugs))) to you, you did the right thing and Augie was lucky to spend his last months with you.

Now that I've wiped my tears I can say that Augie had the best last day a horse could have. It's a tough responsibility to be entrusted with all of a horse's care and it took a lot of love to do what you did. Many hugs and happy dreams of all the good times you had with him.
