I got him November 20th (my B-Day ;D) and I bought him sight unseen. He was about 150 pounds less and peeing blood. He had perferated gastric ulcers, and I almost lost him 2 days later. But thanks to Nancy Scott at CANTER Ohio, Merrial, and Littleton Large Animal, Porter is alive and almost well ;D
Now we are dealing with the fact that he foundered around September and trying to help him there, but I think in the long run he'll be fine, I'm just glad he's starting to gain weight, he used to look like an endangered species.

I'm glad he had you to take care of him! I wondered about founder... I've seen that same inflammation that's on his neck on other foundered horses. Question: Did that appear before he foundered, or after? Just trying to figure out when the inflammation appears, and why. I have a friend who just got an Appendix about a month ago, and she's having a lot of health challenges with him also. I think Porter looks great and cant wait to see how he ends up after a year of TLC!

It's not immflammation, just wet from the snow rolling escapade and a wierd angle ;D
I was so focused on the ulcers I didn't really pay attention to the feet. Then the whole bottom fell out of that foot and he would stand on his toe on the left front, so when we went back for the 3rd scoping I had the vet look, and Porter had 2 abcesses in that foot from the founder. They are healed now, and as soon as my farrier gives the OK to shoe, he should be OK. No where near as bad as I thought when I was told he foundered!
I spent nearly my whole barn building fund on him and his vet bill! So instead I'm putting in an arena with whats left ;D

He DOES look great! No kidding, he HAS gained a lot of weight since the last pic I saw of him. Funny, for some reason, I thought he was a liver chestnut or a dark bay...I guedd the other pics were quite dark LOL. When are you going to start him under saddle?

Thanks you guys! I know he still has a long way to go, but I'm so happy for him to have made it this far! I probably can't start him for another few months, he needs more weight and more feet work, but I can and I am doing ground work like standing square, backing, turn on forhand and haunches.
In his CANTER picture he looked liver chestnut too, but he's actually a shiny red chestnut ;D I loff him I can't wait to get jumping pics either Zen. He's justso easy to work around and be around, I'm so glad I got him ;D

He looks much better! You're doing a great job. If he stands like that often (back feet under), make sure they're trimmed really regularly and give him a nice back and thigh (both inner and outer) massage. The back end takes quite a beating when they founder on the fronts and they get really stiff and sore back there from compensating for the fronts.
