The Hobbit PartII will be out this Friday. I went to see what our movie house is changing now for movie tickets. They have added a "surcharge" to each ticket. Now the afternoon movie cost $10, so for the 2 of us it's $20 just to walk in. I know I can buy the movie at Wallyworld in a few months for about that, so that is what I am going to do I was disappoint in the first movie and think I will most likely disappointed again. Not only did they add characters to this movie not in the book, but in the first movie travel halfway through the book. I think they have added lots more action and more characters that are not in the book. Yes I know it's just a movie.

I look it this way Brooks, the cartoon version is closer to the childs book The Hobbit originally was. To me, this is the more grown up version and all the added characters are of Tolkien's creation and perhaps might have been tempted to put in himself and could have well been there. Just hope PJ doesn't get too carried away, but so far so good I think.
That said, I'm wondering how they can really make three movies out of this, unless Mirkwood is going to be an entire movie on it's own. Then again, it's been a while since I read the book, so perhaps I'm forgetting something.

No I think your right Mirkwood will be most of this movie and then the big battle will be the last.
Remember two things happen in Mirkwood, the spiders and they are captured by the wood elves. And all the running around Bilbo has to do.

Yeah, but sheesh, how far can you stretch that?
If you don't already own the book The Annotated Hobbit, you should get it or see if your library has it. I think I'm going to wait to reread the books until after all the movies are out. That way I'm more likely to enjoy the movies for what they are, then be disappointed in what they are not.
I really do like who was picked to play Bilbo and have no complaints about other cast members either. Thorin is fantastic.

Zen, my bf agrees with you on the cartoon. He said if the new movies would have been as good as the cartoon, he would have watched them all. After seeing the first new movie, not so much.

Yeah, I think the Hobbit without all the unnecessary back story would have been better myself. Ya want to make the Silmarillion, make the Silmarillion. Not that I'm not enjoying it somewhat, I do tend to be a bit more of a purist and Peter missed the point that this was a children's story in the first place. I do think it's the casting that's helping it work for me on one level. They did a great job there.

I somehow watched the 1st movie on Netflix. I read the book years and years ago so I wasn't disppointed. If I can drag hubby to the movies we'll watch the new one together, otherwise we'll wait for it to come on Netflix.

So what's best? Read the book first? Or watch the movie first?
I'm a book-girl myself. But after that the movie is always a disappointment. Well, from the book, you've already 'created' the characters in your head.
I'll never forget the shock of hearing Winnie-the-pooh with an American accent. Though, now I know he was actually Canadian. From Winnipeg.
One to Tee!

I'd go with the movie first. With my work schedule I'll have to wait until next weekend to see it.

You have to think of them as two different things. Just like the HP movies. The book is the actual story Tolkien wanted us to have and enjoy. Jackson took it and added to it. I don't Bara. I'd read first the see movie.
We are going to wait till it's out in DVD.
