We started watching War Horse, but got to the horrible barbed wire tangle scene and couldn't take it any more. Bruce will absolutely not give it another chance. If you saw the movie, and lasted through these nightmarish scenes, what do you think? I get the anti-war message, of course, but I struggle with films that portray a glorious violence for our "entertainment."

I watched the whole movie, and the message I got (i could be wrong) was no matter what happens love prevails. That being said, I don't think it was a great movie. I didn't watch it more than once!!!

Has anyone seen the Broadway play? The traveling company is performing in Toledo in December, and we really want to see it.

I couldn't get through the first half hour of the thing, and tried later with it and it still was bad.

Shhhhh, Our very own Forry was in War Horse and did a great job The movie I have not watched and don't really want too. I know horses were used a lot in wars. And many were treated very poorly. I also know with out them.........maybe wars would have not lasted as long. We have been watching the old Perry Manson TV shows, we find them at Wally world cheep. I remember as a kid we would all sit in the living room and watch them together. They're in black and white LOL and look funny on our large srceen.

I know, Forry is a creative genius!
But the cruelty and insanity of war seems particularly monstrous when it destroys innocent beings--animals and children--and in this story the horses are literally worked to death, or worse. I can't bear to see it, no matter the happy (and completely implausible) ending. I'm surprised the film was rated PG-13, but I suppose young people are less sensitive to brutality now that they see it celebrated in popular culture so often. I just can't get used to it, especially in movies, even those based on books I would read. The visuals are too much for this old woman.

I'm the same way. I can't take it. So, even tho I'd love to see Forry in it (but I've seen pictures, at least!) this is not a movie I'll watch. We've recently watched a (Danish? Swedish?) TV series on Netflix called Arn - knight templar. There was a scene where a rogue Templar gets in a fight with the main character, gets beaten, and out of spite, maims Arn's beloved Arab stallion. The horse has to be put down by his owner's sword. I hate seeing that even tho I know "no horses were hurt in the making of this series and blah blah".

I always hated watching westerns where the horses are shot, and fall, even after seeing how they are trained to fall.

LOL! Forry isn't 'precious' - well, he's PRECIOUS, but he's not 'precious'! He just gets a fun day out. Thea - is it 'Handspring Puppets' from Cape Town? (Or under their auspices?) I regret that I missed the London production. It will never come to Shetland. If it's the puppets, I'm very jealous. Report back! www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMlBEShx7UcAnd especially for ex-racers, the War Horse puppets at Sandown Race Track www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwu_d0xRhdI

Yes, and amazing puppeteers. They really understand horses. More than once have I had to apologise for Forry attempting to eat the flowers at the pub! Ask Zen, Cat or Kmmom! And the way 'Joey' is curious with the camera ..
I can't believe how well they do. I don't know much about 'rod' puppets. I wish, so much, that my Dad was still alive to see them. As an art lecturer, he always had a 'puppet' group; but they were marionettes. (The puppets, not the students..)
He would have loved this!

OK, I liked War Horse. And Ann it's the scene after he gets caught up in the barbwire that is worth watching.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a9-zLDqx5gIt is from a children's book, by Michael Morpurgo. He and his wife, Clare, run a charity called 'Farms for City Children.' They take kids from the inner cities (perhaps, the 'projects', in 'American)'. I did some work with them a few years ago. I didn't PARTICULARLY warm to him, but she was lovely.
