...and feeling like a beginner! Murphy's law: now that I paid for the monthly board at the big event barn, (after hesitating about moving her back to Nancy's since the snow is finally gone), Charm is a little off on the left front, AND got kicked in the face, and looks like a Brontosaurus So, since I couldn't do a lesson on her, the instructor had me ride her 5 yo Oldenburg. In her dressage saddle. It was pretty eye opening, lol! I need to ride more horses. I've grown way too used to Charm. This (very cute, smallish) guy was a LOT of work! He's not naturally forward, he has big gaits, he doesn't steer too well... So, I was bombarded with instructions wile trying to get him truly forward while paying attention. All my usual "buttons" did not work on him! I had to raise my hands a bit to feel the corners of his mouth at all times, then widen them to get him to pay attention, but mostly, keep him straight on the circle and push push push. He was much more willing to canter than to produce a true, connected working trot. Canter was much better, and after the canter we finally got a decent trot! Phew. I worked a lot more than HE did, that's for sure. Next time I'll ask to use my saddle, tho. This one didn't have a narrow twist - torture! Off to tend to poor Charm's cut

I can understand completely niaru. Just going from goalie to Bird can be an exciting change of pace.
Poor Charm, I hope she heals soon.

I'm glad to hear you describe it this way. I have not ridden very many different horses, and each one is so different! Maybe our TB mares have spoiled us, eh? Never have to push those girls. And all those aids that you've established with Charm...they should work for every horse, right?!

Or, I can send you a horse that probably rides a lot like yours. Well, except for maybe the obedient part. Zen and Guy are very, very different.

LOL! I know, Ann, I guess the "Charm-specific" aids don't work on every horse! Interestingly, I've had quite a few different riders on Charm and they all did just fine with her. Hmmm..... And to think that back in the day, before I had a horse, I rode so many different horses and didn't think much of it... Goalie, her face looks a bit better today, the swelling is down and she's not as sensitive on it. I took her out to graze and trotted her in hand and she didn't seem off at all. Maybe I can ride her if I take the nose band off the bridle...

I know the feeling, except I went on a TRAIL RIDE on my stepdad's paint mare in a WESTERN SADDLE, and the whole time I felt so wrong. The mare is nice, but she's small (compared to Bones) and so different than him. He's so athletic, super sensitive, eager to please and responsive, this mare was like riding a saw horse. I couldn't get off her soon enough.
I guess I should ride other horses, it would be good for me, but I like my horse, I like the way he goes, I know the way he feels.

Ah yes. The Trail horse / western saddle experience. I've had one of those, too (Weeping Woods 2004, anyone? lol) and didn't much enjoy it. Couldn't get used to the saddle and the horse had no training except following the one in front.
I would love to try a well-trained western horse tho. Maybe a cutting horse. Those look like so much fun!
But I haven't ridden a horse in the past few years that I like more than Charm.

Weeping Woods was so long ago! But memorable. Poor ponies. Every rider expecting something different of them, and they didn't know much to begin with. (The horses didn't know much. Not the riders. The riders were all experts, right!)
