A few months ago, I drove past a place and noticed they had three horses in their fence, one of which was REALLY skinny. The other two looked ok so I thought perhaps the one was old, ill, a rescue, any number of legitimate reasons why he could be thin and gave them the benefit of the doubt. Today I drove by again. Now, all THREE horses are walking skeletons. So I have a call into animal control and am waiting for a call back. I don't want this on FB because around here everybody knows everybody and what I DON'T want is for them to be tipped off and move the horses like people do to avoid prosecution. Ugh!

Best of luck helping the horses. Quite an agony to deal with.

Good for you. I think most people don't want to get involved. I almost did the same a few years back 5 mares with foals all skinny and could not see anyone feeding them and no one checking water. But just as I was pulling off the road to call the sheriff, the sheriff pulls up behind me. Someone had called already They took the mares and foals

Well, AC called back and as I expected, "I only do dogs". Yesterday I spent on the tractor snowblowing, so I am going to ride by today to try and get some pics before I call the Sheriff's dept. IF I don't get any satisfaction from them, I will call the State Police. The NYSP has a good record for helping animals in distress.

Is there a good rescue in your area? They may know what to do to speed the process up.
Such a shame what people do to the defenseless!

There is one, but I'm not real crazy about how it's run. I think some of their horses actually need rescuing. I know for sure they don't need any more there. I've been in the woman's house and it stinks so bad of cat and dog feces it's almost impossible to breathe. Bleh.

Yeah, pretty much. I rode by yesterday to try and get some pictures and the horses were nowhere to be seen. I will try again today and if I can't see them, I will call the Sheriff's dept. anyway and let them investigate. If they are hiding them in the barn, that could be even worse, but the Sheriff will be able to look around where I can't.

Hope these horses can be saved. Sadly, there are thousands of horses in those same types of situations.

Have you tried your Department of Agriculture? Just a thought. Sorry they may have hidden the horses. A friend of mine years ago reported a lady down the road from her for the same thing. Shortly after they were munching on hay that looked a whole lot like the hay that had been stolen from my friends barn.
