I spoke with his vet prior to getting him and they knew we were going to wait a few months for surgery and said he would be perfectly sound to do low level with out the surgery. His ex-rays are at Mid-Atlantic, no guarantees of the surgery being a success. Both our vet and us have been trying to get in touch with his previous vet and she has not responded. Our new ex-rays already show arthritic changes plus not a minor, what we were told, but a honking broken off OCD. Vets don't have the power to see into the future. When doing a PPE, their only job is to tell you what the horse's state of health and soundness is at. that. moment. Nothing more. By assuring you Ozzy would remain sound for what you wanted to do with him, the vet really went out on an unprofessional limb. I'm sorry this has happened to you and I hope you're able to get Ozzy back to some level of comfort and usefulness through surgery to remove the chip and deal with the OCD lesion. In the meantime, I hope you'll just let him rest.

I agree with Teach. The first thing I would do is quit riding him and give him LOTS of time off. I too, can see it in the video. He's got what we used to call "a hitch in his get-along". Short strided on that side and visibly favoring it. If you can't afford to have the surgery done, I would try to re-home him where he can either be a pasture pet or used for light trail riding, etc. It seems his first vet gave you bad advice.

Our Vet has been out and I have spoken with her several times, track vet has yet to return our messages and calls from our vet to have a consult.
He blew and abcess on that hoof, he is now sound, after the vet checking him our farrier checked him he showed no signs of a abcess brewing it popped today. He is now walking sound.
Our vet had a consult with Mid Atlantic, she used to work there and they said barring complications he should be sound for Nicole to do up to 2'6"2'9". And he should be sound for w/t/c now. Don't worry he will not be pushed and his well being is our priority. Even if he is only sound for light riding or trails he is with us for the long haul!

Woo hoo - glad it was "just" an abscess!

Yeah, good news that it was the abcess brewing, causing that issue! Hope things stay on the up and up with him!

Glad the culprit was an abscess. Annoying as those are, they generally heal quick once they blow. Jingles that all keeps heading in the right direction.
Ironically, about what Teach said. I know someone who had a horse pass the vet check completely only to have OCD develop a few years later. However, depending on what you plan to do with a horse and/or spend on a horse, it's still a good idea.

Who knew I'd ever be excited for an abcess!? It did feel better immediately the BO said he drug him from the indoor, he was feeling good and wanting his supper! Mr. Gentleman was feelin' good!
Nicole tries so hard not to get her hopes up when it comes to horses, she's had so many disappointments over the years but after days of being quiet and stoic she finally looked at me last night and said "he is my dream horse". So as much as I hope and pray for a wonderful outcome for Ozzy I hope and pray just as hard for my girl to have her dream finally come true.
I am thankful for a wonderful Vet and a BO that always is very attentive and goes out of his way to do everything he can for all the horses.
Thanks for all the support and keep on jingling for our boy!

I hope he's everything Nicole hopes for. You must be so relieved it was "only" an abscess. I remember my old, been-there-done-that vet once told me (about a "mystery" lameness on Charm) that 95% of the time, lameness is in the foot. Abscess, stone bruise, etc. (that time, he was right, too, it was a deep stone bruise).
I'm glad Ozzy is feeling better! It was fun to watch him run like that.

He is definitely feeling better, grumpy about being in he has been turned out in the indoor, tomorrow he goes out with the boys. I am a basket of nerves, but I know he needs to go out and move around and get all the spit and vinegar out of him. He gets stocked up in the stall. He is still getting soaked and packed, but on his way to being mended! He is a total lovebug, buried his head in my chest while his foot was soaking!
