As I mentioned our boy has an OCD on his L hock, we got a text on Wed he was super lame. BO brought him in to get his new shoes and he was fine, went had lunch and when they took him out he could barely walk. So we called the vet, he gave him bute, took his temp.
She came Friday and took new ex-rays, she said it's more than small and it is broken off, they told me he was drained and injected on the 21st of Jan, so that is way too soon for him to be needing it again, so we made the decision to drain and inject to see how long it lasts. She drained 10 plus cc's and it was thin not the stringy consistancy you would expect so his body was making lots to try to get comfortable.
He rested for the first day and Nicole hand walked him for a little yesterday and quiet turnout starting tomorrow.
Keep the big boy in your thoughts, please.
He is a saint always a gentleman and is a big lovebug.

Sounds alarming, but it sounds like you're on top of it, and your vet is responsive. Bet wishes for Ski Bum's quick recovery!

We visited the boy, who by the way name change again, he is now and always will be OZZY! He was good yesterday, he gets 2gms of bute AM and today is the last for that. Nicole rode him, I posted a video below, he does seem to favor it but he may always, not sure. He had no swelling, no heat. Looked great at the trot. His ex-rays are at Mid-Atlantic, I am still waiting for his films from his previous vet for comparison, a bit unheartening to have to wait. If you could watch the video and let me know what you think, if we weren't looking so hard at it do you think it would be horribly noticeable? The running in the video was his first day in turnout when we got him. I sure hope he doesn't run like that when he gets back on full turnout! www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG4TCCZlQEI&list=UUKTw7EhyTG4Io5ecvnL3RuA

I am not an expert by any means, so from my view he doesn't look distressed at all. I didn't notice it at all.
He looked good running at that first turnout, and I am here to tell you that he will probably run like that again. Goal is 22 and runs even harder when he gets the desire too. He is a very hand some boy. Please give him some pats from me.

Yes, he is visibly lame. I can see the hitch in the step as well as the deviation in the "flight" of the leg. And, yes, he will certainly run like that many more times in his life. Your vet can help you decide about the wisdom of light tranquilazation with acepromazine for return to turnout after layup.

I didn't notice it so much in the "first" trot portion, but in the walk and then the second trot portion, yes, it was visible, and I couldn't even remember if it was front or hind, left or right when I was watching the video. I just looked at the left hind & knew he was off. :-(
I had a TB with OCD - he was fine, but we just did trail with him - nothing too demanding.
Is he going to be a show horse or just a pleasure horse?

So it hasn't even been a week since he was injected and he is in so much pain, he won't even put it down. I am at my wits end. I was told he would be fine for lower level things until we got the surgery, not even sure the surgery would fix it! I do not know what to do.

Did you have him vetted prior to purchasing him with bloodwork? Was he on any painkillers, perhaps? I know you've only had him a couple of weeks, correct?
What does the vet think the prognosis after surgery will be? :-(

How far are you from New Bolton? I think that's where I'd be headed with this guy.

I spoke with his vet prior to getting him and they knew we were going to wait a few months for surgery and said he would be perfectly sound to do low level with out the surgery. His ex-rays are at Mid-Atlantic, no guarantees of the surgery being a success. Both our vet and us have been trying to get in touch with his previous vet and she has not responded. Our new ex-rays already show arthritic changes plus not a minor, what we were told, but a honking broken off OCD.
