No they're not. If your horse isn't fighting and he's doing what you like, well, does it get any better? Check out a Pat Parelli book or video. He goes ON about things to do in a rope halter. You can ride with ONE rein and flip it back and forth over his head to change sides. Try steering both ways with the rein on one side, then on the other- OH practice the flipping over the head FROM THE GROUND first, PLEASE and you can do your bends and all of the pivots and such in a halter. What I STRONGLY recommend is that any leg cause the behind to move independent of the front and any rein affect the front, so to sidepass you would HAVE to ask with a rein AND a leg...which makes a sidepass more advanced than either a pivot on the forehand or a pivot on the haunches. And it won't hurt to try BACKING around the pivot foot sometimes instead of going forward around it-- ie, forward- pivot around the INSIDE foot, backwards, around the OUTSIDE. Make sure you have a good clear visual and don't be afraid to LOOK at the feet after every little move. The trick with horses is to keep them moving away from pressure but in a passive state. A horse in a passive state likes to lean into pressure, and generally a horse needs to get excited to want to move away from pressure. We condition them to move away from pressure without getting excited, and then we have a "mannerly" horse.

I'll try the one rein thing today. He got the hang of neck reining yesterday, we'll see how it goes. I tend not to use my hands very much, just get uber nervous about it (not sure why, haven't psycho analyzed myself - I actually have very light hands). But I do use my butt a lot to encourage him to move or to stop.

I used to ride my QH in a halter with a lead rope and I would just have it on one side and direct rein him to turn that way, and then neck rein him to turn the other! He was a cool horse that way.

a bit expert, but you should know me and then once you remember me you'll realize that it isn't a complete stranger appearing out of nowhere talking through her NOODLE, but someone you already know and believe about such things. Anyhow, look it up. If a bits action is defined by its being raised in the mouth, which any bit with "lifters" is, it's a gag. That would be why they are considered "unconventional."
