Oh no! I've got too many books going at once. An Irish Country Christmas (kind of like James Herriot, but with people instead of animals. It seems like I've had this on the nightstand for ages) Animals Make Us Human (I'm discovering how I have spent a lifetime confusing my pets!) The Underneath (A kids' book, award winner, so I should read it because of my work.) Hot, Flat and Crowded (Environmental issues, and most likely to be returned unread if Friedman doesn't get past the blame game soon.) The Naked Quaker (Couldn't resist the title, and it's really good--accounts of court trials in early New England.) The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (Maybe the best piece of fiction I've read in years. I want to savor this one. You all must read it!) Ballistics: Poems (Billy Collins--I like his poems, but some of these are very dark. What did I expect with such a title! But there's a fine one about statues that run away. This doesn't count the all cookbooks I bring home with good intentions. It's an occupational hazard of working in a library. There are times, though, when I can't seem to find anything I want to read. Lately, all I want to do is read.

Ad, I think I may be the only person in the world who was unsatisfied with Edgar Sawtelle. I hated the ending- like I said, it was very unsatisfying to me.
I'm reading "The Help", about black domestic help during the beginning of the civil rights movement. I'm also reading the new Sweet Potato Queens book (can't remember the exact title), and as usual it is hilarious. I recommend Sweet Potato Queens books whenever you need a great, bawdy laugh!

Oh no! I'm still very early in the story. I will be so sad if the ending is a letdown. I think I was the only person who felt that way about Cold Mountain. I hated the ending of that book. I know where to find the Sweet Potato Queens if I need a tonic after Edgar S.

Ahh, Cold Mountain- I did love that book! I read it at my in-law's house, and my MIL said it was the first time she ever saw me cry. Now his next book- that one really sucked.
Maybe you'll be satisfied with the ending. Everyone else seems to like Edgar Sawtelle, even Oprah. Please, let me know when you get there, and we can discuss it.

I still have not finished any of these books, though I read every day! Edgar Sawtelle is haunting me.

I don't know how you can read so many books at the same time!! The most I've had together were 2, and that was annoying to me, lol.
Edgar Sawtelle is next on my list. I just started The Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, and it looks like a great read. Before that I read a few French books for work and pleasure, including Palestine by Hubert Haddad. I don't know if it's in translation yet, and it's so poetic that I don't know how good the translation would be. It's a haunting book.
