I make them. I've made 5 full ones that go over the head, with a zipper, and I charged $35 for them. Then I've made about 12 of the shoulder guard only ones, and I charge $15 for them. The only problem I've had is that I have to catch the material on sale to be able to sell them under catalog price, so colors are just what I have on hand. Also, my pattern is a large, so I have to guesstimate if it's for a smaller horse. So far I've just sold mine to people at the barn and we will try it on the horse, then customize it if need be. The size I make seems to fit most horses though. I have not made the full body bag one yet. Forest has a lime green sleazy and a lime green fleece blanket liner that I made him. I've also made saddle pads. Forest and I have every design in lime green or a pattern with lime green. I'm about to make a hot pink sleazy hood with a zipper. I think it will look smashing. I made a light pink one for my friend's horse, Elvis, and it looked great on him.

Johnnie, I need a HUGE one for Nate. The biggest ones are still too small. If I emailed you measurements, could you make him one? I don't really care about colors, but I'm not sure he'd like hot pink. Wait, I take that back, he might loff it, he IS on Estrone now SMay, my QH Tom had that problem. I used to do a quick barn check before bed and he'd still have 4 flakes of hay on the ground and his hood would be off and covering his eyes, I guess he wouldn't eat what he couldn't see ;D. He'd just stand there, for who knows how long, and wait for me to fix it!!

How big is Nate (height/weight)? I forget, I know he's ISH, so pretty heavy. The big thing I've noticed in getting a good fit has been neck length. Forest has a long neck and I had to make the neck part of his a bit longer than usual.
Sure, send me the measurements around his nose (where his noseband goes), around his girth, and then from where his noseband goes, under the jawline, following the contours, to the throatlatch, down to the bottom of his chest. I guess maybe around the front too from front of the girth on one side to the other side. It won't take very long for me to sew one up and I will ship it for him to try on. Then if it's not big enough or too big, I can alter it, or make a bigger one. I think I have a bright blue, hot pink (not neon, more fuschia), muted pink, and some light grey right now. The blue is really pretty. I think I can get a really dark purple too, almost black. They had some the other day when I looked.

Thanks, I'll get those this morning! I think he's 1250-1300 and 17'1 but I'll get out the weight tape too.
Dark purple would look cool, AND maybe you wouldn't see all the poop stains on it ;D

Hey, I am with Lynne. I would like to have one in hot pink or blaze orange to put on to ride during hunting season. I have some hot pink material that I use for a rump rug, but haven't found anything workable for the other end of the horse. I don't know--how about some input from people who use these things? Can I make this work with a saddle? Hot pink seems to actually show up better in the woods than blaze orange. My guess is that they figure they could NEVER get the male hunters to wear hot pink, so they compromised on the orange. Anyway, whatever it takes to make my chestnut mare not look like a deer. Linda

Surely to heavens between all of us we could do this? Couldn't we get white lycra blend or whatnot and dye it the semi-appropriate color? I know it'd be extra work/charge but ...? Or maybe we could chain make them...lol...someone buys and dies and sends to the sewing person

15 years ago me and a friend had kinda made our own slinkies outa stretchy materials. We came up with the idea after so many nights staying up of trying to get our horses ready for shows, I had a palamino that loved to look or the dirtiest spots to lay in. People thought we were crazy then but it sure worked great and now they sell them....we didnt use all fancy colors or paterns thou LOL. Im thinking of geting my old guy one forunder his blankie cause its rubbed the hair off his shoulders where it rubs the blanket and he has to have the blanket on since he is so thin and wastes all his energy tokeep warm w/o his warm blankets. I saw a neon orangeone with paw prints all over it LOL....

Michelle- I will go tomorrow and see if I can get the purple. I should have bought it when I saw it, but hopefully, it is still there.
Claire- If your guy isn't monster huge like Nate, then the horse size one that I have been making should fit. I've put this size on a bulldog built 16.1 hand QH to a lanky 16.2 hand TB. The grey fabric is really stretchy too. Do you want a full hood or a shoulder guard? I can make 2 full hoods in a day, if I have the day off, so it's no problem.
It's funny. I had never sewn. Then my mother came to visit and brought her new sewing machine (to make me a saddle pad actually). When she left, she left the machine and the instruction manual. I got bored one day and read the manual, went and bought material, borrowed stuff from the barn for patterns, and wala...lol.
As for dying the material, I'm pretty sure that manmade materials like lycra, polyester, and nylon (which is usually what these fabric combos are) are very hard to dye yourself.
Also, if the hood/guard doesn't fit when I send it, I will fix it or make a new one, no problem. We have the ones I've made on the horses at my barn, 24 hours a day, in turnout, under their blankets and I've only had trouble with one of them. Evidently this horse's blanket curls in in the front and the buckles have rubbed through the material and almost all the way through the elastic too. Good thing it wasn't rubbing against bare skin, or I'm afraid he'd have a nasty sore. Oh, one fat horse broke his elastic too. I almost forgot about him..lol. Anyway, I will repair them for free.
