Hi Sarah, you scare me too. That's a compliment. :-)
I am 40ish and 5# away from last year's pre-pregnancy weight. I used to run 20-40 miles/week depending on my racing interests, and now only run half that to make time to ride. I returned to riding a couple years ago after not owning horses for 15 years. I want to do little local shows again, h/j like when I was 16. Don't make fun of me. And it wouldn't hurt to lose those 5 (or 6 or 7) pounds.
Here are my challenges, for anyone who wants to add comments/suggestions:
-No indoor arena for now, so I'm at the mercy of the weather
-OTTB mare on a weight gain, muscle building program so I don't ride her too much
-Husband, yearling son and dog not into horses yet, but I spend a lot of time with them anyway ;-)
-I own a small business with fluctuating income, so I can't commit to other horses or a trainer now
-We don't have a nanny
Here's what I do have to work with:
-Muscle memory
-Friend's OTTB I can ride, but still no indoor facility
-Occasional dressage and hj lessons
-gym 4 x/week (strength training)
-total hours I can schedule during a week for running, riding, and working out: 6-8
The challenge is to get the mare and myself both fit. Sometimes I jog her in hand 2 miles, maybe with poles or walk/trot/walk transitions. She is tired after 2 10 min. miles, but I will have only burned 175 calories.
I think I'm lucky to get the 6-8 hours I do have, and the horses and gym are all within 2 miles of my house. In good weather this means I can score a run to and from the barn in addition to a 20-40 min. ride. In the winter, not so much.
Summary: I need a plan to make all workout and riding time count and some synergy would ideal (like, core and leg exercises that will help with riding). Cardio takes a lot of time.
